Terrence William “Blondie” Chaplin is a South African singer and guitarist born July 7, 1951. He is originally from the city of Durban, where he was a member of the band The Flames in the 1960s. He was a member of the Beach Boys from 1972 to 1973 and contributed to the band’s albums Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” (1972) and Holland (1973). As a member of the Beach Boys, he was responsible for the lead vocals on the timeless song “Sail On Sailor.”

Beginning in 1997 and continuing for the next 15 years, Chaplin served as a long-term backup singer, drummer, and acoustic rhythm guitarist for the Rolling Stones on their records and tours. In addition, he played the acoustic rhythm guitar. Blondie Chaplin was released in 1977, and Between Us was released in 2008. These are Chaplin’s solo albums. While Chaplin grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era, he was considered “Coloured.”

Chaplin and Ricky Fataar were both members of the rock band The Flames, located in Durban and which they joined when they were 13 and 9 years old, respectively. In South Africa, the band’s rendition of “For Your Precious Love” became the most-played song on white radio for thirteen weeks after being released on their album Soulfire in 1968. Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys was in London then and caught The Flames when they were playing there. Wilson was the one who produced the band’s self-titled record and also signed them to the Beach Boys’ Brother Records label.

This band, whose name was originally Flames but was changed to The Flame to prevent confusion with The Famous Flames, who were backing vocalists for James Brown, sang soulful rock and pop tunes in the style of The Beach Boys and Badfinger. Aside from The Beach Boys, The Flames were the only band to record for Brother Records throughout their time together.

Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar became a member of the Beach Boys when the band’s original drummer, Dennis Wilson, had a hand injury that prevented him from playing the drums for over two years. For the band known as the Beach Boys, this was a time when longtime member Bruce Johnston had left the band, and the presence of former frontman Brian Wilson in the band was relatively restricted.

As a direct consequence, Chaplin and Fataar became full-fledged members of the Beach Boys rather than only serving as background musicians. After a disagreement with the Beach Boys’ management in 1973, Chaplin resigned from the band the following year, and Fataar followed suit the year after. In addition to playing on The Beach Boys in Concert live album, Chaplin is credited as the lead vocalist on several songs that appear on Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” and Holland, the Beach Boys’ two studio albums.

“Sail On, Sailor” from the album Holland, on which he is the main vocalist, is his “signature song. After his tenure with the Beach Boys, Chaplin recorded an album under his name, eventually released by Asylum Records in 1977. In addition, he contributed to Rick Danko’s first album, which bore his name and included not only Rick’s old comrades from The Band but also Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Doug Sahm, and Danko’s brother, Terry.

After that, Chaplin became a member of the David Johansen band and went on tour with them. He also assisted in the production of Johansen’s third solo album, Here Comes the Night, on which he played guitar, performed backup vocals, and was a co-author of seven of the songs. In the late 1980s, Chaplin went on tour with The Band. During this time, he covered some of Richard Manuel’s vocals and played guitar and, on occasion, drums.

In the 1980s, Chaplin also traveled with a band that included Rick Danko and Paul Butterfield. On Butterfield’s last studio album, The Legendary Paul Butterfield Rides Again, released in 1986, Chaplin was the guitarist and singer and contributed a song as a composer.
In addition, Chaplin was a prominent performer in Gene Clark and Michael Clarke’s then-new band, The 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Byrds, better known as the Tribute to the Byrds. This band performed music by former members of the band the Byrds.

Jennifer Warnes’ albums Shot Through the Heart, The Hunter, and The Well included Chaplin as a guest performer. In addition, Chaplin contributed his music “Where I Should Always Be” to The Band’s ninth studio album, High on the Hog, published in 1996. Not only did Chaplin perform on this record, but he also contributed his composition to it. Chaplin went on tour with Mick Taylor, a former guitarist for the Rolling Stones, and appeared on his CD of live performances, titled Stranger in This Town.

Beginning in 1997, as the Rolling Stones were in the process of writing, releasing, and touring in support of the album Bridges to Babylon, Chaplin acted as a supporting singer, drummer, and, on occasion, backing guitar player for the band while they were in the recording studio and on the road. This role lasted for around 15 years. On the album Bridges to Babylon, Chaplin is credited with backup vocals, tambourine, piano, bass guitar, percussion, shakers, and maracas. He also played maracas.

Skollie is a band founded with fellow South Africans Keith Lentin on bass and Anton Fig (of the CBS Orchestra) on drums. Chaplin is the singer, composer, and lead guitar player for Skollie. Chaplin has released three solo albums, the most recent of which was in 2006 and titled Between Us. In the latter half of 2013, Chaplin appeared as a special guest at a few of Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck’s performances, who were once members of the Beach Boys.

Chaplin also appears on Wilson’s album No Pier Pressure from 2015, where he is the featured vocalist on the song “Sail Away.” Following this, Chaplin went on tour as a featured artist for Brian Wilson’s 2015 tour, with Al Jardine, with Rodriguez serving as the opening act. In 2016, he became a Wilson’s Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary World Travel member and began playing with the touring band. Since then, he has continued to travel with Wilson and will do so until 2022.

At a ceremony held on September 29, 2017, at The Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Al Gomes and Connie Watrous, both members of Big Noise, presented Chaplin with a plaque on behalf of Roger Williams University. “I played a lot in these parts in 1971, and it’s nice to be remembered this way,” Chaplin said in reaction to the sold-out crowd at the “Brian Wilson Presents Pet Sounds” performance.

The performance by The Beach Boys on September 22, 1971, at what is now known as RWU’s Baypoint Inn & Conference Center in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is honored by a plaque that may be found there. The performance was the first time that Chaplin and Fataar performed together as formal members of The Beach Boys. As a result, the band’s live and recorded line-up has effectively transitioned into a multicultural ensemble since then.

The next tour that Brian Wilson will be doing with English guitar star Jeff Beck already included two other founding members of the Beach Boys, namely Al Jardine and David Marks. Now, for at least five of the dates, Blondie Chaplin, a guitarist, and vocalist who was a member of the Beach Boys, will join Wilson. Chaplin, who briefly joined the archetypal Southern California fun-in-the-sun band in the early 1970s, will be a part of Wilson’s concerts in Hollywood, Florida, New York City, Las Vegas, Oakland, and the hometown event on October 20 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Chaplin was a member of the band for a short period.

Wilson, now 71 years old, revealed this information to Pop & Hiss via a representative. “Blondie was one of my favorite singers in the 1970s.” “He blew my mind with [his voice on] ‘Sail on Sailor,’ and he also performed on a song called ‘Funky Pretty,’ which can be found on the Beach Boys’ album titled Holland. Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar, both natives of South Africa and former members of the band the Flame, joined the band.

It was the only act other than the Beach Boys ever signed to the group’s Brother Records label, featured on the “Holland” album in 1973 and its immediate predecessor,1972’s “Carl & the Passions/So Tough.” The album was released in 1973. Both were formal members of the band then, and they both participated in the concert caught on the live album “The Beach Boys in Concert,” released in 1973.

On specific dates of the Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck Concert Tour, including those in New York City and Los Angeles, Chaplin will play songs with Wilson and Beck. These songs will include Chaplin’s hallmark song with Holland, “Sail On Sailor,” and other songs written during his time with the band. Al Jardine and David Marks, both of whom were members of the Beach Boys, will accompany Beck and Wilson on their tour this autumn.

At the time of its initial release in early 1973 and its re-release in 1975, “Sail On, Sailor” could have been mistaken for another in what had become a string of hit collaborations for the Beach Boys. These collaborations included Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” which Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston worked on, and Chicago’s “Wishing You Were Here,” which Al Jardine, Carl, and Dennis Wilson worked on.
