American actor Bradley Darryl Wong was born on October 24, 1960. Wong became the first actor in Broadway history to win the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Clarence Derwent Award, and the Theatre World Award for the same role for his portrayal of Song Liling in M. Butterfly.

In addition to an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, he was nominated for a Critic’s Choice Television Award for his performance as Whiterose on Mr. Robot. Wong has portrayed many notable characters throughout his career, including Howard Weinstein in Father of the Bride, Dr. George Huang in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Father Ray Mukada in Oz, Dr. John Lee in Awake, Dr. Henry Wu in The Jurassic Park series, Hugo Strange on Gotham, and Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme in Seven Years in Tibet.

Something’s Killing Me with BD Wong is a medical documentary series Wong hosts on HLN. He is also an accomplished voice actor and stage performer. Wong lent his voice to Captain Li Shang in the Disney animated films Mulan (2001) and Mulan II (2004) (a direct-to-video sequel) and the computer game Kingdom Hearts II (2005).

Wong grew up in San Francisco with his mother, a supervisor at a telephone business named Roberta Christine Wong (née Leong), and father, a postal worker named William D. Wong. He is the middle sibling of two brothers. His ancestors came to Hong Kong from mainland China. Before enrolling at San Francisco State University, Wong studied at Lincoln High School, where he participated in and led several school productions.

On May 27, 2022, San Francisco State University awarded him an honorary doctorate. Wong’s breakthrough role in M. Butterfly, starring John Lithgow, brought him widespread acclaim. Wong, who at the time went by his initials rather than his full name, received numerous honors for his work on the play. After that, he stopped punctuating his initials.

He is the first actor to win all five major theater awards (Tony, Drama Desk,[4] Outer Critics Circle, Clarence Derwent, and Theatre World) for the same performance. In addition to his role as FBI psychiatrist Dr. George Huang on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, he has appeared in reoccurring roles on All American Girl and Oz: The Great and Powerful for its entire six-season run, as well as making guest appearances on The X-Files and Sesame Street.

His film credits include Jurassic Park (1993), Executive Decision (1996), Slappy and the Stinkers (1997), and the 1990 version of Father of the Bride and its 1995 sequel. In addition to Disney’s Mulan (1998) and its direct-to-video sequel, he also voiced Captain Li Shang in the computer game Kingdom Hearts II.

He made his Broadway comeback in the 2004 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures and in the 2003 revival of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, in which he played Linus opposite Anthony Rapp, Roger Bart, and Kristin Chenoweth. In 1990, Wong raised concerns about Actor Equity over the casting of Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce in the character of The Engineer for the Broadway run of Miss Saigon. Pryce had performed the part from the beginning of the show’s 10-year extended run in London.

In response to Wong’s protest, the union first prohibited Pryce from performing the part. However, after hearing Charlton Heston’s solid objections and Cameron Mackintosh’s threat to cancel the American production of the musical, the union changed its mind and allowed Pryce to take the role.[quote missing] Pryce eventually took home the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical.

Wong performed 12 characters in the one-person show Herringbone, which premiered in 2008 at Princeton University’s McCarter Theatre. The following year, he took the production to San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse. In 2012, Wong appeared in two shows of Herringbone at Dixon Place in New York to raise money for the organization. Timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original New York production, this live recording for a 2014 CD release was his first performance of the material in New York.

In 2014, under Carey Perloff’s direction at American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T. ), Wong performed in the U.S. debut of James Fenton’s famous rendition of The Orphan of Zhao, a traditional Chinese fable dating back to the fourth century BC. The Orphan of Zhao is a powerful tale of retribution and selflessness. As the last heir of a noble and slaughtered clan, a rural doctor is compelled to sacrifice his kid in the wake of a political coup. Together with La Jolla Playhouse, they produced The Orphan of Zhao.

In July 2011, Wong said that he would be leaving the Law & Order: SVU cast to play Dr. Johnathan Lee, the combative therapist of Jason Isaacs’ LAPD investigator in the NBC police thriller Awake. Wong appeared as a guest star on Law & Order: SVU in the May 2, 2012 episode “Father Dearest” from Season 13.

In 2015, he became La Jolla Playhouse’s Artist-in-Residence. In the episode “The Walking Dead” (which first aired on CBS on February 3, 2015) of NCIS: New Orleans, Wong featured as Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. Gabriel Lin. Wong also portrayed the mysterious Whiterose on USA Network’s Mr. Robot. Whiterose is the hacking group Dark Army leader and pretends to be Zhang, the Chinese Minister of State Security.

In the second season, he was listed as a recurring character, and in the third season, which premiered on October 11, 2017, he was elevated to a regular cast member. Something’s Killing Me with BD Wong debuted on HLN on August 13, 2017, with Wong as host. The program delves into genuine medical conditions that are out of the ordinary and have no known cause or cure.

These people will perish without promptly discovering a cause and a remedy. Theatre professor Esther Kim Lee profiled Wong for her book 50 Key Figures in Queer US Theatre, published in 2022. The Ali Forney Center, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Materials for the Arts, and Rosie’s Theater Kids are just a few of the LGBT and arts organizations that benefit from Wong’s time and money.

From 1988 to 2004, he married Richie Jackson, a talent agent. Through a surrogate mother in 2000 using Wong’s sperm and Jackson’s sister’s egg, the couple had twin boys, Boaz Dov and Jackson Foo Wong. Ninety minutes after his birth, Boaz Dov passed away. In 2003, Wong published a book titled Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man (ISBN 9780060529536) on his time spent as a surrogate.

Wong and Jackson broke up back in 2004. Wong and his ex-partner Jackson share parental responsibilities for their kid with Jackson’s spouse, Jordan Roth. Jackson Foo, his son, came out as homosexual when he was 15.BD Wong has accomplished a lot in his life and work. The San Francisco native has featured in four Broadway productions and received a Tony Award. Wong has been in several blockbuster movies, including the Jurassic Park trilogy.

Fans will remember him from his starring appearances in popular TV shows, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Gotham, and Mr. Robot. His voice is so popular that it is often used in video games. The 62-year-old Brooklynite is taking on a new task now that he has turned his attention to directing. A new musical based on the film Mr. Holland’s Opus was one of many stage productions that Wong directed last year.

Not only does he play Nora’s dad, Wally, in the Comedy Central show Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, but he also directs episodes. Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated spinoff, will finally bring us back to the realm of the titular creatures. Sam Wing’s initial encounter with the lovable cultural icon Gizmo is the focus of this prequel series. Joe Dante directed the first two Gremlins movies, and Steven Spielberg served as executive producer for the Tze Chun-created series.

The remainder of the Wing family is played by top-tier talent in Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, despite the series primarily focusing on young Sam Wing and his friends. All the vitality and complexity that one would expect from actors of Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, and James Hong caliber is there in their portrayals of Fong Wing, Hon Wing, and Grandpa.

Although Wen, Wong, and Hong have collaborated in different configurations throughout the years, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is the first production in which all three have starred together since Mulan in 1998. On the third hour of TODAY on April 7, his former “Law & Order: SVU” co-star BD Wong revealed what it was like to be on a text chain with the rapper and actor. This is a funny surprise, given his prolific production of rap albums and TV appearances.
