Anita Baker, (born January 26, 1958, Toledo, Ohio, USA), American singer, whose three-octave range and strong emotional performance gave her worldwide acclaim in the 80s and 90s. She has been one of the most popular artists in contemporary urban music and has contributed to the definition of her sophisticated, traditional soul and blues singing.

When she sang in Church Choirs in Detroit, where she grew up, Baker’s talent first became apparent. Against the wishes of her family, she left college to pursue her career, perform in nightclubs with local bands, and joined the funk group Chapter 8, which she toured for several years with and captured an album including the hit “I Just Want to Be Your Girl.” Baker was discouraged when his record company dropped the band. Lurking back in Beverly Glen Records’ business, she recorded The Songstress (1983), an album which sold over 300,000 copies and spent over a year on charts. As she moved to Elektra, she served as the managing producer of Rapture (1986), a new album that won 2 Grammy Awards and sold more than 5 million copies. The Giving You the Best That I have Got album and a three-month tournament with Luther Vandross followed in 1988, and Compositions was released in 1990. Personal problems led Baker to have a four-year break, but she returned with the Rhythm of Love album in 1994. She signed with Atlantic Records in 1996.

There was another hiatus, but Baker resumed in 2002, and My Everything appeared on the Blue Note label two years later. She focused on performing after releasing a holiday album (2005).

Career

Gospel music, the genre of American Protestant music rooted in the nineteenth century religious revivals which evolved in different directions within the White (EU) and Black (AU) United States communities.  In the later 20th century, gospel music became a popular business genre with worldwide artists.

White gospel music emerged from various European American music traditions in the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as protestant Christian hymnody, spirits of revival and a number of popular styles. This musical combination has produced a form that has maintained some distinct qualities, despite many developments. Music is generally strophic (in verses) with a refrain, and its texts typically portray the importance of salvation and personal religious experiences. Most of the repertoire is placed in the key and arranged in four-part harmony, the melody in the top voice being similar to the song of barbershops.

Gospel music, the genre of American Protestant music, rooted in 19th-century religious revivals which developed in the White (American) and Black communities of the United States, in different directions. In the decades, both the white and black traditions have spread through the publication of songs, concerts, recordings and religious services on radio and television. Gospel music developed into a popular commercial genre in the later 20th century, with artists touring worldwide.


When she was 12 she started singing in a gospel chorus and at the age of 16 she played with several local bands. In 1975, she succeeded in auditing Chapter 8, one of the most popular acts at the time in Detroit, when the band eventually signed with Ariola and released an album in 1979, but was immediately dropped when Arista (who did not care about Baker’s singing) acquired the label. Chastened, Baker worked in Detroit with a low payroll and finally found steady work as a law firm receiver.

In 1982, Baker was contacted by Otis Smith — the executive who had worked with Chapter 8 — for his label Beverly Glen. Happy at its employment advantages and knowledge of Arista’s experience, Baker at first was unwilling, and eventually flew to the West Coast to record his first album, The Songstress, in 1983. Although the exposure was not quite sufficient to become a hit, Baker helped build a strong fan base with word-of-mouth and was signed in 1985 by Elektra.

Following Compositions, Baker stopped recording and touring; after her first son returned to the studio in 1993 to create Rhythm of Love, released in 1994. In the following years Baker was largely silent, despite a jazz album crying out by her fans, but raises her family and gets stuck in contractual disputes with Elektra, leading her to move to Atlantic. In 2000 she started working on a new album, but she had to start with the defective recording equipment, which made the original tracks unsalvable. It was announced in 2004 that she signed with Blue Note and worked on her new album.

Meanwhile, Night of Rapture: Live was released by Atlantic imprint Rhino, a video concert which was originally available in 1987. Finally, Baker returned to the studio in 2003 and released her first album in 10 years, My Everything. She released her first vacation album Christmas Fantasy two years later. The 2012 return single, “Lately,” a Tyrese cover, was nominated for Grammy in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category. Only Forever, his parent album was prepared for 2013.
