Chevy Chase was born Cornelius Crane Chase in New York City, New York, to Edward Tinsley “Ned” Chase and Cathalene Parker on October 8, 1943. His grandma gave him the moniker ‘Chevy Chase.’ His father worked in Manhattan as a book editor and magazine writer, and his mother as a concert pianist and librettist. The family originated in New York City’s Lower Manhattan. Chase was expelled from school, according to a common urban legend. He claimed, however, in an interview, that he dropped out of school for academic concerns. He completed his pre-med studies and graduated from ‘Bard College’ in 1967 with a B.A. in English.

Rather than enrolling in medical school, Chase and his friends Walter Becker and Donald Fagen created ‘a, lousy jazz band.’ Prior to discovering his actual calling, he worked in a variety of odd jobs to make ends meet. He co-founded ‘Channel One,’ a comedy troupe, in 1967. He played drums and keyboards for an ambitious rock band called ‘Chameleon Church.’ Before disbanding in 1969, the band released only one album.

Following his musical career, he sent a satire to ‘MAD’ magazine on ‘Mission: Impossible. In 1973, he became a member of National Lampoon’s off-Broadway performance of ‘Lemmings.’ He was a cast member of ‘The National Lampoon Radio Hour’ from 1973 to 1974, alongside John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner. Chase signed a one-year contract with NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1975. He later became a member of the show’s main cast.

Chase was on his way to Hollywood a year later. He was then nominated for a ‘Golden Globe’ for his feature film debut, ‘Foul Play,’ in 1978. Chase appeared in the 1980 film ‘Modern Problems.’ He barely averted electrocution while filming. He also starred in the sports comedy picture ‘Caddyshack’ that year. The first installment of the ‘National Lampoon’ series, ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), proved to be a watershed moment in his career. Chase then joined ‘Fletch’ in 1985. It was Gregory Mcdonald’s first film version of his ‘Fletch’ novel series.

Between 1987 and 1988, he reached the pinnacle of his profession, charging exorbitant fees for his work. He was featured alongside his pal Simon in the song ‘You Can Call Me Al.’ In 1987 and 1988, he also hosted the ‘Academy Awards.’

1989 was a year of sequels for Chase, as he starred in the second and third installments of the ‘National Lampoon’ series, ‘National Lampoon’s European Vacation’ and ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’. Chase’s career suffered a setback in the 1990s when films like ‘Nothing But Trouble,’ ‘Memoirs of an Invisible Man,’ and ‘Cops & Robbersons’ failed to perform well at the box office.

In 1993, Chase presented ‘The Chevy Chase Show.’ The show, which was produced by the ‘Fox Broadcasting Company,’ was canceled after five weeks. In 1995, Chase made a comeback with the picture ‘Man of the House,’ which performed better than his prior ventures at the box office.

After nearly a decade away from television, he reappeared in guest parts on shows such as ‘Law & Order’ and ‘Brothers & Sisters.’ Additionally, he portrayed ‘Ted Roark’ in the comedic picture ‘Chuck.’ He made his television debut in 2009 on the comedy series ‘Community,’ portraying a tycoon named ‘Pierce Hawthorne.’

In 2010, he appeared in the films ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ and ‘Funny or Die. The latter was a little internet film in which Chase portrayed President Ford. He left the comedy series ‘Community’ in 2012 due to creative issues with the show’s director. He reappeared in the season five opener as a cameo.

His recent ancestors hail from England, Denmark, Scotland, and Ireland.

When he was two years old, his grandma gave him the nickname “Chevy.” Chase was a cast member of Saturday Night Live (1975) from the show’s inception until 1976 when he left to pursue a highly successful film career. All of his films demonstrate his gift for deadpan humor. Regrettably, his career deteriorated throughout the 1990s, starring in duds such as the forgettable Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) and Cops and Robbersons (1993).

More recently, he returned to Community (2009), where he had a recurring role for the first four seasons. Prefers family-friendly films and has declined various offers, including the lead in American Beauty (1999).

On Saturday Night Live (1975), his now-famous “Good evening, I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not” opening line was a parody of New York newsman Roger Grimsby’s “Here now the news.” On a handful of occasions, I filled in as drummer for the undergraduate band The Leather Canary. He describes them as “a lousy jazz band.” Additionally, the band featured Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who would later form the rock band, Steely Dan.
