Career

Conan O’Brien, full name Conan Christopher O’Brien (born April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States), is an American late-night talk show host and comedian. He is best known for hosting Late Night with Conan O’Brien (1993–2009), The Tonight Show (2009–10), and Conan (2010–21).

O’Brien was the third child of six; his mother was a lawyer and his father was a physician who taught at Harvard Medical School. He showed an early passion for entertainment and comedy, taking tap dance lessons and writing funny plays as a child. O’Brien began his academic career at Harvard University in 1981, majoring in American history and literature. He wrote for The Harvard Lampoon, the premier humorous journal of the institution, and was chosen president for an unusual two consecutive terms in 1983–84.

O’Brien moved to Los Angeles in 1985 after graduating magna cum laude from Harvard to join the writing team for HBO’s popular news-show parody Not Necessarily the News. He spent two years writing for the show and was a member of various improvisational groups, including The Groundlings.

In 1988, he joined Saturday Night Live (SNL) as a writer, where he created popular recurring characters such as Mr. Short-Term Memory and the Girl Watchers. O’Brien and fellow Saturday Night Live writers earned an Emmy Award in 1989. In 1991, O’Brien left Saturday Night Live to join the writing staff of The Simpsons, a successful animated sitcom about an eccentric suburban family. O’Brien’s satire and goofiness were instrumental in the show’s popularity, and he eventually became a supervising producer.

After David Letterman’s late-night talk show was moved to CBS in 1993, NBC hired O’Brien to fill the vacated time slot. Conan O’Brien’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien began in September 1993 to a barrage of media attention. O’Brien was frequently compared to Letterman, and his inexperience and uneasiness in his new role were clearly visible on camera.

The show was widely panned by critics, and NBC began handing out 13-week contracts one at a time, fueling speculation that the show would be canceled. O’Brien, on the other hand, gradually built a devoted following. Late Night with Conan O’Brien resembled a traditional late-night talk show in appearance—with O’Brien behind a desk, sidekick Andy Richter (who stayed with the show until 2000) assisting with his jokes, and a hip band led by Max Weinberg (drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band) playing in the background—but O’Brien was every bit as irreverent and silly as Letterman.

His material was geared squarely toward the 18- to 34-year-old demographic, incorporating recurring comedy segments such as “Audience Hygiene,” “Classic Films Dubbed by Children,” and “Clutch Cargo,” in which O’Brien “interviewed” celebrities whose images appeared on a screen with moving lips superimposed. Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, a puppet played by Robert Smigel, was also successful. The show received multiple Emmy nominations and won one for writing in 2007.

In 2004, Jay Leno, the show’s long-serving host, announced his retirement in 2009, and O’Brien was appointed his replacement. The final broadcast of Late Night with Conan O’Brien aired in February 2009, and O’Brien took over as host of The Tonight Show in June, once again with Richter by his side.

However, O’Brien’s Tonight Show suffered in the ratings, and rumors began in January 2010 that Leno might return to the show. The ensuing drama was heightened by late-night comedians’ monologue wars, in which they traded insults with NBC and with one another. O’Brien quit The Tonight Show in late January following contentious talks with NBC. He was succeeded by Leno. O’Brien, who was legally barred from appearing on television for six months under the rules of his contract with NBC, began a live comedy tour in April, which was documented for the documentary feature Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (2011).

In November 2010, he returned to late-night television as the host of TBS’s talk show Conan. Conan’s hour-long show was cut to 30 minutes in 2019 due to dwindling ratings, and the show was canceled two years later. During this time period, he launched the popular podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend (2018).

Along with hosting his chat shows, O’Brien participated in a variety of television episodes and films, frequently in the role of himself. He provided the voice of the Riddler in a number of animated films, including The LEGO Batman Movie (2017).
