Yoko Ono is a famous Japanese musician, artist and filmmaker. Yoko Ono was born on February 18, 1933, in Tokyo, Japan, to Eisuke Ono and Isoko Yasuda Ono, who came from a wealthy banking family.Her dad was transferred two weeks before her birth to San Francisco and was thus only able to meet her when the family moved to the United States in 1935.

The family returned to Japan in 1937 and was admitted to Gakushuin School. In 1940, she moved to New York City then back to Hanoi next year, where she attended primary school in Keimei Gakuen. In 1951 she and her family travelled to Scarsdale, New York, and studied at the Sarah Lawrence College, but left in the middle of 1956. In 1956 she married Toshi Ichiyanagi.

Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived and in 1962 the couple split, and she was briefly committed for serious depression in a mental hospital. Anthony Cox, whom she married in June 1963, liberated her from the psychiatric hospital. In August 1963, the couple welcomed a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox. This marriage again did not succeed and in 1969 they divorced.

Her third couple with John Lennon (in March 1969), a founding member of the Beatles Rock group, suffered a series of disruptions and patch-ups following involvement with her personal secretary, May Pang. In October 1975, the couple had a son, Sean Taro Ono Lennon. The connection terminated in December 1980 with Lennon’s assassination.

A romantic affair was reported with Sam Havadtoy, a Hungarian antique trader, which terminated in 2001. Her son, Sean, is a well known musician and composer who recorded ‘Rising’ album with her in 1995 under his band Ima Rising. In 2008, he started a new group called The Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger. In 1982, together with John Lennon and Jack Douglas, she got the Grammy Award for ‘Double Fantasy’ under the Year’s Album category.

In 2001 she received an honorary PhD in law from the University of Liverpool and in 2002 an honorary PhD in fine arts from Bard College. The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art honoured her with the 5th MOCA Award in 2003.

She got her lifetime achievement from the New York Japan Society in 2005 and the Venice Biennale Golden Lion Award in 2009. In March 2011 she released a mixed version of her song “Move on Fast,” which toped the American Billboard Dance Chart with its 8th hit since 2000 on the dance chart. In 2012, she won the highest prize for applied art in Austria, the Oskar Kokoschka Prize. In 2013, she got an honorary citizen of Reykjavik, Iceland, and Alder Hey Charity, London was appointed honorary patron.

Her loft performances on Chamber Street attracted the attention of major avant-garde artists in New York, who gave her the opportunity to work with leading musicians like as Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, George Maciunas and Nam June Paik. She travelled to Tokyo, where she met American jazz musician and filmmaker Anthony Cox and returned with her new family to New York, after her first marriage had failed.

Her first seminal act, ‘Cut Piece’ was performed in Tokyo and was favourably welcomed. In 1965 and 1966, she repeated her acts in Manhattan and London, which made her feel in the art world. In 1966, she developed an artistic “Bottoms” commercial film after 365 friends and volunteers consented, as part of an experiment with performance, to take their nude buttocks.

She met John Lennon in 1966 during her London art exhibition, with whom she collaborated on various artistic and musical ventures. The first album ‘Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins,’ and experimental ‘Revolution 9’ were issued in the duo’s ‘The White Album.’ ‘Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions’ followed soon after, ‘The Wedding Album.’

In 1969, they formed a band of their own, Plastic Ono Band and released their first album ‘Live Peace in Toronto in 1969.’ One year later, Ono recorded her first solo album ‘Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band’ listed on the US charts at #182. A double album, “Fly,” was released in 1971 and an album of the protest-song “Sometime in New York City” was released in 1972.

She released two solo albums the next year, ‘Feeling the Space’ and ‘Approx. Infinite Universe.’ In 1981 she recorded the melancholy and sad solo album ‘Season of Glass’ and an upbeat album ‘It’s Alright (I See Rainbows)’ after the loss of her husband Lennon. During the following years, she published a succession of albums, like ‘Every Man has a woman,’ ‘Milk and Honey’ and ‘Starpeace,’ before she returned to visual and performance art.

She debuted with the musical ‘New York Rock’ on Off-Broadway in 1994. This was followed by Rykodisc Records’ reissue of her solo recordings in 1997. Career

Her 80s production covered the 1981 glass season, her magnificently devastating response to Lennon’s assassination, through the utopian Starpeace of 1985. Ono’s work as a forward-looking musician was progressively realised in the 1980s and 1990s. Elvis Costello, the B-52s, and Sonic Youth covered her songs, and Onobox released her music in 1992, making it more accessible.

Ono refused to rest on her laurels in later years, and the 1995 Rising was just as provocative as its previous compositions. Her childhood was rather lonely and isolated; a few weeks before she was born her father, banker and former pianist, had been relocated to San Francisco, and her social mother had often been occupied with thriving parties. Until the age of two, when the family moved to San Francisco, she did not meet her dad.

Three years later, however, they returned to Tokyo to avoid the anti-Japanese backlash that began in the United States in response to Japan’s increased military ambitions. Ono was raised at the Gakushuin School, Japan’s most prestigious private school (the Emperor’s children were her classmates).

She started classical piano lessons at the age of four and began singing lessons at the age of fourteen. In 1945, his mother withdrew his family to the fields and fled Tokyo to survive the Allies’ huge bombing of the capital; however, the wealthy city residents were unfriendly and the children of Ono were often forced to beg for food.

In 1952, Ono joined her family at Sarah Lawrence College in the US. The couple went to Manhattan in 1957 and, among other intermittent occupations, Ono ends up teaching Japanese art and music to the Japan Society (she had rejected her parents’ wealth and the lifestyle). The Chambers Street loft of the couple rapidly became a hot spot in the emerging art scene in New York City.

Ono frequently organised “happenings” (sometimes in association with minimalist composer LaMonte Young) between December 1960 and June 1961, with music, poetry and other performances, and John Cage used the loft to conduct classes of experimental composition.

Ono debuted interactive conceptual sculptures such as Painting to be stepped on during this period, a white canvas that was once the viewer walked over to become a finished work of art. This painting was presented in her first solo display held in July 1961 at the Gallery of George Maciunas AG.

At November of this year, Ono participated in the Carnegie Recital Hall, an event featuring a spraying toilet throughout the show. Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band (1970), a collection of primarily improvised rock songs to which she contributed ululating vocals influenced by Kabuki and the operas of Austrian composer Alban Berg, launched her musical career despite the setback.

Later solo efforts, such as Fly (1971) and Approximately Infinite Universe (1973), were praised by some as exemplars of rock’s cutting edge, yet Ono was criticised for his abrasive manner, which alienated a large portion of the listening public. Following the birth of their son, Sean, in 1975, Ono and Lennon returned to their private lives, but they cooperated once again on Double Fantasy (1980), which won the Grammy Award for best album of the year for the first time.

In December 1980, however, a crazed fan assassinated Lennon and killed him instantly. Throughout her long and varied career, Ono appeared in a few films and television shows. The majority of her parts were in short films alongside John Lennon in the 1970s, but she later lent her voice to Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated blockbuster Isle of Dogs, which was released in 2008. In the years following Lennon’s death, Ono worked on a number of memorial projects for him and managed the publication of some of his previously unreleased music.
