As the descendant firm of Harm Huizenga, Wayne Huizenga, Dean Buntrock, and Larry Beck created Waste Management, Inc. in 1968 and began aggressively purchasing many of the smaller waste collection firms across the country. Waste Management went public in 1971, and by 1972, it had made 133 acquisitions and generated $82 million in revenue. In 19 states and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, it had 60,000 business and industrial clients and 600,000 residential users. Waste Management bought Service Corporation of America (SCA) in the 1980s to become the country’s largest waste handler.
Between 1976 and 1997, the executive officers of Waste Management, Inc. began “cooking” the books by refusing to record expenses required to write off the costs of failed and abandoned landfill development projects; creating inflated environmental reserves (liabilities) in connection with acquisitions so that the excess reserves could be used to avoid recording.
“The financials appear the way we want to display them,” officers were accused of doing. In 2005, the top officers reached a $30.8 million settlement with the federal authorities without admitting wrongdoing.
In 1993, Waste Management, Inc. was renamed WMX Technologies, Inc. as a worldwide emblem of the company’s other services, which included solid waste removal, recycling, and disposal.
In 1997, a new CEO took over the company and ordered an audit of the company’s accounting processes. Waste Management restated its earnings from 1992 to 1997 by $1.7 billion in 1998, making it the highest restatement in history.
Waste Management amalgamated with USA Waste Services, Inc. in 1998, marking a watershed moment in the company’s history. John E. Drury, CEO of USA Waste Services, was retained as chairman and CEO of the combined business. After that, Waste Management moved its headquarters from Chicago to Houston. The Waste Management brand was kept by the merging company. Due to brain surgery, John Drury stepped down as chairman in late 1999. The chairman and CEO post was later taken over by Rodney R. Proto. Unfortunately, the newly expanded corporation ran into difficulty in the shape of an accounting scandal that same year.
Turn-around CE was brought in to help Waste Management recover in November 1999. Since then, the company has introduced new technology, safety standards, and operational procedures, and it has been steadily improving. On July 14, 2008, Waste Management made an all-cash offer for Republic Services, Inc. for $34 per share.
The bid was upped to $37 per share on August 11, 2008. Republic Services, Inc. declined Waste Management’s request for the second time on August 15, 2008. Waste Management dropped its bid for Republic Services on October 13, 2008, citing financial market instability as the reason. The worldwide economic crisis caused Waste Management to slash and restructure its employees aggressively in January 2009.
Following the Super Bowl, CBS premiered a new TV series called Undercover Boss on February 7, 2010. Lawrence O’Donnell III, the COO of Waste Management, took part in the first episode and got a firsthand look at the inner workings of the organisation he helped operate. On July 1, 2010, O’Donnell resigned from Waste Management.
Winters Brothers took over all of WM’s operations in Connecticut and New York (excluding New York City) in 2015, and continues to service these areas under contract with WM.In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Waste Management sponsored Sterling Marlin’s #14 car from 2006 to 2007.
