Washington Capitals wikiA professional basketball team representing the United States in the United Nations’ capital city. The Wizards (then known as the Washington Bullets) won an NBA title in the 1977–78 season after making four appearances in the NBA finals in the 1970s.

The Chicago Packers relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1963 and changed their name to the Bullets, a name they kept for the rest of their existence. As a result of the violent connotations associated with the term “bullet,” they have renamed the Washington Wizards in 1995 after owner Abe Pollin decided to change the team’s name because of the name’s association with violence.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that future Hall of Fame players like Earl Monroe, Wes Unseld, and Elvin Hayes made the Bullets regular competitors for the NBA championship that the team made its first appearance in the NBA playoffs in 1964–65.

That decade, the Bullets topped their division six times, making the playoffs every year and capturing the NBA championship in the 1977–78 season. After a disappointing regular-season record of 44 wins and 38 defeats, the Washington Bullets won their first professional sports championship in 36 years with a string of three straight playoff series upsets.

Through the mid-1980s, the Bullets regularly made the playoffs with teams that included guard Jeff Malone, center Moses Malone, and forward Bernard King. In the following decades’ Bullets, teams were less successful. Washington qualified for the playoffs only once between the 1988–89 and 2003–04 seasons.

After retiring from the NBA in 2000, Michael Jordan became a minority owner of the team and the organization’s executive director of basketball operations. In 2002, he came out of retirement to play for the Wizards, but he was unproductive and decided to retire for good in 2003.

Pollin cited Jordan’s bad management judgments as to the reason for his decision to part ways with the most famous basketball player in history as team president. Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler led the Wizards back to the playoffs in the mid-2000s, but the team plummeted back into the bottom rungs of the league in the 2008–09 season and traded away most of its best players in subsequent years.

Astonishing young point guard John Wall was instrumental in the Wizards’ 2013–14 playoff berth. This season, Wall led the Wizards to their first division title in 38 years and a seven-game conference semifinal series loss. The Wizards were back in the playoffs the following year, but they lost in the first round. There was no playoff competition for Washington in the 2018–19 season because of a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered by Wall.

One of basketball’s best all-around players is largely believed to be Michael Jordan. He guided the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles (1991–93, 1996–98) during the course of his career.

Washington Wizards Biography/Wiki

Born in Wilmington, NC, and attending the University of NC Chapel Hill, Jordan began his career as a professional basketball player. In the 1982 national championship game, he scored the game-winning basket as a freshman against Georgetown. In both his sophomore and junior years at North Carolina, Jordan was voted College Player of the Year. In 1984 in Los Angeles and 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, he led the U.S. basketball team to Olympic gold medals.

The Chicago Bulls drafted Jordan in 1984. The following year, he was crowned Rookie of the Year after leading the NBA in scoring for seven straight seasons, averaging roughly 33 points per game. He returned the following season after missing most of it with a fractured foot to lead the league in scoring for another seven years. The only other player to reach 3,000 points in a single season was Wilt Chamberlain (1986–87).

Five times (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 1998), Michael Jordan was selected the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), and once as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Following the Bulls’ third consecutive NBA championship in 1993, Jordan briefly retired and entered the professional baseball ranks. In March 1995, he resumed his basketball career. This season’s Bulls regular-season winning percentage of 72.10 ranks as the NBA’s best-ever (until 2015–16, when it was surpassed by the Golden State Warriors).

The Bulls led by Michael Jordan won three titles in a row from 1996 to 1998, and Jordan was selected MVP of the NBA finals in each of those years. Retiring for the second time in 1997–98, Jordan announced his retirement.
