Washington Capitals wikiThe Washington Capitals are a National Hockey League (NHL) professional ice hockey team headquartered in Washington, D.C. (NHL). With two conference titles (1998, 2018) and a Stanley Cup victory under their belt, the Capitals are no strangers to championship success (2018).

After being founded in 1974, the Capitals had a catastrophic first season, going 8–67–5 in the regular season. At the time, the team had the poorest winning % in the NHL history (.131). Despite some progress in the following seasons, the Capitals nevertheless finished last or second to last in their division seven times in a row. In the 1982–83 season, the “Caps” finished with a winning record and made it to the playoffs for the first time.

Between 1983–84 and 1987–88, the squad was led by right-wing Mike Gartner, defenders Larry Murphy and Rod Langway to five straight second-place divisional finishes. Washington made it to the conference finals in both 1988–89 and 1989–90, but the Capitals couldn’t proceed further that point in the postseason until the mid-1990s.

Right-wing Peter Bondra and goaltender Olaf Kolzig led the Capitals to their first conference title and Stanley Cup finals appearance in 1997–98, but they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. Four of the next five seasons saw the team post winning records, but they failed to go past the first round of the playoffs each time.

The Capitals selected Alex Ovechkin, a winger, in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Between 2007-08 and 2010-11, he led the team to four straight division titles, including a league-best record in 2009-10, and another division title in 2012-13. However, his Capitals teams were marred by postseason disappointment, and they failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs in six consecutive appearances, including last season. Capitals postseason run ended in 2013–14, but the squad rebounded with a second-place divisional finish in the 2014–15 season. Nevertheless, despite leading the New York Rangers by three games to one, Washington lost a nail-biting second-round series that saw all seven games decided by a single goal, continuing a recent trend of snakebitten postseason runs.

During the 2015–16 season, the Capitals set a franchise record with 56 victories and finished as the league’s best team. Washington, on the other hand, was swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing each game by one goal. The Capitals’ postseason woes continued in 2016–17, as the team finished the regular season as the NHL’s top team with 55 victories, but the Penguins again knocked them out in the second round.

Washington Capitals Biography/Wiki

In 2017–18, the Capitals of the Ovechkin era finally broke through. After falling behind by two games to the Penguins in the first round, Washington rallied to win the second and advance to the Stanley Cup finals, where it lost to the eventual champion Blackhawks. Washington then defeated the Lightning in seven games to win the conference title and seal its place in the championship series.

The Capitals won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights, a young team in its first season of existence, in five games. The triumph was Washington’s first major professional sports title in more than a quarter-century, as well as the first in the Capitals’ 44-year history. The Conn Smythe Trophy was given to Alexander Ovechkin as the postseason’s most valuable player. To be clear, the Capitals’ Stanley Cup triumph did not halt their recent trend of playoffs meltdowns in the early going. In 2018–19, they won their fourth straight division title but were knocked out in the first round.

Quenneville began playing competitive ice hockey as a youngster, first with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) (1975–78) and later with the NHL-affiliated New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League (AHL) (1978–79). The Toronto Maple Leafs selected him with the 21st pick overall in the 1978 NHL draught. He was a capable defenseman who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Colorado Rockies–New Jersey Devils, the Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes), and the Washington Capitals before retiring in 1992.

As a player-coach with the American Hockey League’s St. John’s (New Brunswick) Maple Leafs for one season, Quenneville decided to devote the remainder of his career entirely to hockey coaching. AHL Springfield Indians head coach in 1993–94, he then joined the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques–Colorado Avalanche team as an assistant coach in 1994–95. Quenneville’s first NHL head coaching job was with the St. Louis Blues after the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup that season.
