Walt Disney, full name Walter Elias Disney, was an American motion picture and television producer and showman who was best known for creating such cartoon characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He also designed and built Disneyland, a massive amusement park outside Los Angeles that opened in 1955, and he was working on a second one, Walt Disney World, near Orlando, Florida, at the time of his death. He started the Walt Disney Company, which has grown to be one of the world’s largest entertainment conglomerates.

Walter Elias Disney was the fourth son of peripatetic carpenter, farmer, and building contractor Elias Disney and his wife, Flora Call, a former public school teacher. When Walt was a baby, the family moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri, a typical rural Midwestern town that is thought to have served as the inspiration and model for Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. Walt began his education there, when he first shown an interest in and ability for sketching and painting with crayons and watercolours.

His restless father soon gave up farming and relocated the family to Kansas City, Missouri, where he purchased a morning newspaper route and forced his young kids to help him distribute papers. Many of Walt’s mature habits and compulsions arose from the disciplines and discomforts of helping his father with the paper route, he later remarked. Walt began his cartooning studies at a correspondence school in Kansas City, and later attended seminars at the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design. The Disneys returned to Chicago in 1917, and Walt enrolled at McKinley High School, where he shot photographs, drew for the school paper, and studied cartooning on the side in the hopes of landing a career as a newspaper cartoonist. His career was hampered by his service as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross in France and Germany during World War I.

When he returned to Kansas City in 1919, he worked as a draughtsman and inker in commercial painting studios on the side, where he met Ub Iwerks, a young artist whose talents were important at Walt’s early success.

Dissatisfied with their development, Disney and Iwerks established their own little studio in 1922 and purchased a secondhand movie camera with which they produced one- and two-minute animated commercials for distribution to local movie theatres. They also created Laugh-O-grams, a series of animated cartoon sketches, and Alice in Cartoonland, the pilot film for a series of seven-minute fairy tales combining live action and animation. Disney was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1923 after a New York film distributor defrauded the young producers. He came to California to pursue a career as a cinematographer, but the unexpected success of the first Alice picture prompted Disney and his brother Roy, a long-time business partner, to reopen their business in Hollywood.

Disney resurrected the Alice series with Roy as business manager, asking Ub Iwerks to join him and help with the animation. They created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, signed a distribution deal for the flicks for $1,500 apiece, and successfully established their modest business. Disney and Iwerks experimented with a new character, Mickey, a joyful, active, and mischievous mouse, in 1927, just before the switch to sound in motion movies. When The Jazz Singer, a motion picture starring popular singer Al Jolson, brought the novelty of sound to the movies, they had prepared two shorts, Plane Crazy and Gallopin’ Gaucho, to debut Mickey Mouse.

Recognizing the potential for sound in animated-cartoon films, Disney swiftly produced a third Mickey Mouse animation, Steamboat Willie, which had voices and music, and shelved the other two soundless cartoons. Steamboat Willie was a hit when it debuted in 1928. The Skeleton Dance, in which a skeleton rises from the graveyard and performs a bizarre, clattering dance set to classical music, launched a new Disney series called Silly Symphonies the following year. The picture was original and briskly paced, ensuring audience plaudits for the series, but Disney’s operation was constantly in jeopardy as prices rose due to the more sophisticated sketching and technological effort.

The public’s appetite for the dream of small creatures with human speech, skills, and personality attributes was evidenced by the growing popularity of Mickey Mouse and his lover, Minnie. (Until 1947, Mickey’s voice was provided by Walt Disney himself.) As a result of their popularity, new animal characters such as Donald Duck and the canines Pluto and Goofy were created. In 1933, Disney released The Three Little Pigs, a short film set in the middle of the Great Depression that swept the country. Disney thoroughly endeared himself and his cartoons to audiences all over the world during this period of economic hardship in the early 1930s, and his organisation began to make money despite the Depression.
