Urban Meyer Wiki/Bio

During the BCS era, Urban Meyer was one of the SEC’s most successful coaches, guiding the Florida Gators to two national championships in 2006 and 2008. As the head coach of the Gators, he was 5-1 in bowl games and led quarterback Tim Tebow to the Heisman Trophy in 2007.

Urban Meyer has spent more than 30 years in college football, first as an assistant coach at some of the best institutions and then as one of the most successful head coaches of this or any age.

With that accomplishment has come a lot of backlashes. Meyer’s handling of charges of domestic violence against one of his former assistant coaches at Ohio State is the most recent example. Meyer’s previous troubles during his time in Florida followed him even after he left the program in 2010.

The one constant is victory. Here’s a look at Meyer’s coaching career, which started and may end at Ohio State. Meyer gets his first break as the wide receivers coach at Colorado State, where he reunites with Bruce, who was fired after the 1987 season at Ohio State. Meyer spent six seasons with the Rams in that position.

Meyer is hired by Lou Holtz to coach the wide-outs at Notre Dame. Meyer was hired because of Skip Holtz’s son, who knew Meyer from his time at Colorado State. Meyer remained on the Fighting Irish staff after Holtz was replaced by Bob Davie in 1997, and he held the role until 2000.

Career

Meyer is hired as a graduate assistant by then-Ohio State coach Earle Bruce – the grandfather of later wide receivers coach Zach Smith — after graduating from Cincinnati, where he played defensive back. He worked there for two years before moving on to Illinois State as an assistant coach in 1988 and 1989.

Meyer, now 36, gets hired by Bowling Green, which had a two-win season in 2000. He rapidly transformed the Falcons into a competitor in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green won eight games in Meyer’s debut season and nine games the following year, giving him the second-best winning percentage in program history at 73.9 percent.

Meyer took another step up the coaching ladder when he moved to Utah, then a member of the Mountain West Conference, where he was able to swiftly turn the Utes into a conference and national contender, much as he had done at Bowling Green. Meyer’s second team, headed by eventual No. 1 overall pick quarterback Alex Smith, finished 11-0 in the regular season and won a position in the Bowl Championship Series, where it defeated Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl, after going 10-2 and securing a spot in the Top 25 in 2003.

Meyer’s transformation into the hottest coaching name in college football was complete: Notre Dame was vying for his services, with speculation that he might succeed Tyrone Willingham, but he selected Florida instead. Meyer’s first squad went 9-3 and ended 16th in the final poll, but his biggest victory came on the recruiting road when Florida defeated Ohio State in the battle for Tim Tebow.

Meyer won his first of three national titles. The Gators only lost once with Tebow as part of a two-quarterback rotation, to Auburn in October, and thrashed Ohio State 41-14 in the BCS national championship game.

After then, there was a third title. Despite Tebow’s Heisman Trophy, the 2007 season was a letdown, with only nine wins and a third-place finish in the SEC East. The 2008 team, led by Tebow, a stacked roster of likely NFL talents, and a mentality created by an avoidable regular-season loss to Mississippi, is largely regarded as one of the greatest of the BCS era.

Meyer resigns as Florida’s head coach, citing a recent medical scare following a loss to Alabama in the SEC title game and a desire to spend more time with his family. At least for the time being. He would be the head coach for Florida’s bowl game, which they would win over Cincinnati. In March, he returned to full-time work.

Meyer resigns for good this time. In a statement, he added, “I feel it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field.” The Gators battled through a grueling regular season to win the Outback Bowl and finish 8-5, despite finishing outside the Top 25. Meyer’s coaching career has come to an end with the lowest result of his career.

Meyer will be an analyst and color commentator for ESPN during the 2011 season. Meyer is named as the Buckeyes’ next head coach after nearly two weeks of publicly refuting allegations linking him to the open Ohio State job — his predecessor, Jim Tressel, was sacked for lying to his superiors about NCAA sanctions.

His first team goes undefeated, going 12-0 and finishing the regular season with a win over Michigan, but due to preexisting NCAA sanctions, they are ineligible for the conference title game and the resulting bowl berth. The Buckeyes, on the other hand, finish third in the Associated Press poll, and the program is up and running.

Meyer’s third national championship came in the first year of the College Football Playoff, putting him in rare company as the only coach in FBS history to win championships at two distinct schools. OSU beat Alabama and then ran over Oregon to win the championship, despite being a controversial selection for the playoff field. With a narrow victory over Wisconsin, Ohio State wins the Big Ten championship, but is left just outside the playoff field.
