One of the most popular and innovative bands of the 1980s, U2 was an Irish post-punk band from Dublin that became a household name by the end of the decade.
U2’s grandiose sound, a fusion of the Edge’s sparse, reverb-drenched guitar and Bono’s quasi-operatic vocals, was born out of the European punk rock explosion of the late 1970s. Despite their lack of technical experience, the band members began rehearsing at a Dublin secondary school. In 2014, Songs of Innocence, a Danger Mouse-produced album, was made available for free to all iTunes consumers many weeks before its physical release. Controversy erupted, although the band’s music received mixed reviews, with many critics claiming that the band’s sound remained unchanged. There were several negative reviews for Songs of Experience in 2017, although it sold well.
Bono and the Edge have also written the music and lyrics for the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark in addition to their touring activities. There were multiple cast and crew changes and overruns, but the show opened to a sold-out house in June 2011 and played until January 2014.
