John Tyson, an Arkansas farmer, started selling chickens when his son Don was still a child during the Great Depression. Don Tyson grew up with the company, eventually transforming it into a chicken industry behemoth. Tyson Foods, Inc. grew to be a major participant in the beef, hog, and seafood sectors during the 1990s.

John Tyson purchased 50 “springer” hens in 1935 and transported them to Chicago to sell for a profit. Tyson Feed & Hatchery was the name of his company two years later. The enterprise prospered for the next 13 years by buying and selling hens, helped along by the postwar boom, which introduced better kitchen appliances and the first supermarkets. Tyson eventually got into growing chickens, which gave him more control over the quality of the products he marketed. The firm was incorporated in 1947.

Don Tyson graduated from college five years later and joined the company as the chief of operations. The father and son were said to work well together, with the older Tyson being more cautious and the younger one being more aggressive. Don persuaded his father, for example, to raise rock cornish game hens, a market that Tyson would eventually dominate.

Tyson worked on developing manufacturing facilities for the next six years, and in 1958, the business established a processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas, which is also where the company’s headquarters are located. Tyson also debuted its first ice-pack processing machine, putting the company in a more competitive position in the industry. Its reliance on other suppliers was reduced as it achieved more complete vertical integration.

The low cost of feed grains and the easy availability of credit enticed many amateur chicken growers into the market in the early 1960s. As a result, between 1965 and 1967, broiler production increased by roughly 13%. The resulting glut resulted in significant price reductions and around $50 million in industry losses. Several small businesses were forced to close, while demand for low-cost chicken increased dramatically. People consumed four times the amount of chicken they did in 1950.

Tyson became a public company in 1963, and its name was changed to Tyson’s Foods, Incorporated. The Garrett Poultry Company, situated in Rogers, Arkansas, was also its first acquisition. After John Tyson and his wife perished in a car accident in 1966, Don Tyson took over as president of the company.

The poultry industry was substantially revolutionised by technological advancements in the 1960s. Broiler production had become one of America’s most industrialised and automated industries. Chickens were maturing more swiftly as a result of the development of improved feeding and disease control strategies. These enhancements, combined with greater competition, resulted in lower pricing for consumers, but fewer profits for processors. Tyson lost more than a dollar a share in earnings in 1967, despite a 37 percent increase in sales. Nonetheless, the corporation took advantage of a scenario in which several smaller businesses were struggling, and with the purchase of Franz Foods, Inc., it resumed its practise of buying out smaller chicken businesses. It also started printing “Tyson Country Fresh Chicken” on its wrappers instead of the name of the grocery where the birds were sold, to increase visibility of its brand.

When an Agriculture Department officer claimed that Tyson and two other processors had discriminated against Arkansas chicken producers who were members of a poultry farmers’ group, Tyson and two other processors went to court.  A federal appeals court found in 1969 that the Agriculture Department had “erred” in recognising chicken processors as meatpackers and thus lacked the ability to take action against them under existing statutes.

Tyson also bought Prospect Farms, Inc., the company that would become its precooked chicken segment, in 1969. Tyson produced more than 2% of the nation’s chickens in that year, 70% for retail sale and 30% for institutions. In northwest Arkansas and southwest Missouri, the corporation had grown from 15 to 3,000 employees and owned five chicken processing plants and four protein processing plants.
