Toronto Maple Leafs pictureThe NHL franchise situated in Toronto is called the Toronto Maple Leafs that competes in the Eastern Conference of the league (NHL). The Toronto Maple Leafs have a historic history in hockey, having captured the Stanley Cup 13 times during their existence.

The Toronto Arenas were the original name of the Maple Leafs until they changed their name to St. Patricks in 1919.  To start off the league, they won two Stanley Cups back-to-back in 1917-18 and 1921-22. The team was dubbed the Maple Leafs in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought it and christened it as such. The “Kid Line” of Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson, and Joe Primeau, all under the age of 26, led Toronto to the Stanley Cup in the 1931–32 season.

The Leafs had six Stanley Cup final appearances between 1932 and 1939, losing all of them. Hap Day, a former teammate and standout who coached the team for five seasons before taking over, led the squad to its first championship in 1941–42. Toronto bolstered its lineup with the addition of centre Ted Kennedy in 1942, and Kennedy helped the Raptors reach the final four of the Day’s championships in 1942–43 and again in 1950–51. From 1961–62 to 1963–64, the rebuilt Maple Leafs team led by head coach Punch Imlach and filled with future Hall of Famers (right-wing and centre George Armstrong, goaltender Johnny Bower, centre Red Kelly, centre Dave Keon, defenseman Tim Horton, left-wing Frank Mahovlich, left-wing Bob Pulford, and defenseman Allan Stanley) won three Stanley Cups in a row. They won a fourth in 1966–67 with a rebuilt team.

Since that decade was their first without winning a Stanley Cup, the Leafs struggled in the 1970s, despite the All-Star play of Darryl Sittler and Börje Salming for the most part. It didn’t get any better for Toronto as time went on. The Leafs never finished higher than third in their division or advanced further than Round 2 of the playoffs while playing in the 1980s. However, even though they won their first division title in 37 years during the 1999–2000 season behind Sundin’s leadership, Toronto’s Maple Leafs were unable to go past the conference finals throughout his 13 seasons in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs returned to the playoffs in 2012–13 after a franchise-record postseason drought, only to prolong the agony of the team’s beleaguered fans by losing the series-deciding seventh game in overtime after leading the Boston Bruins 4–1 midway through the fourth period.

Toronto Maple Leafs Biography/Wiki

Although the Maple Leafs have struggled in the recent past, they continue to draw large crowds thanks to the fervour of Toronto hockey fans and the team’s lengthy history of the rivalry. Of all of these rivalries, the one with the Montreal Canadiens is the most acrimonious. This rivalry plays on the differences between the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, as well as between English- and French-speaking Canadians.

As a player in the National Hockey League (NHL), Joel Quenneville won three Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks. As a head coach, Joel Quenneville has guided the NHL team to three more championships (2010, 2013, and 2015).

Quenneville began playing competitive ice hockey as a youngster, first with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) (1975–78) and later with the NHL-affiliated New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League (AHL) (1978–79). The Toronto Maple Leafs selected him with the 21st pick overall in the 1978 NHL draught. Prior to retiring in 1992, he was an accomplished defenseman who had worked with the Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies–New Jersey Devils, Hartford Whalers (now Carolina Hurricanes), and the Washington Capitals, among other teams, including time in the American Hockey League (AHL).

AHL player coach Quenneville spent his final season in New Brunswick with the St. John’s (Maple) Maple Leafs before going into full-time coaching. AHL Springfield Indians head coach in 1993–94, he then joined the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques–Colorado Avalanche team as an assistant coach. Quenneville’s first NHL head coaching job was with the St. Louis Blues after the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup that season.
