Tom Cotton, full name Thomas Bryant Cotton, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2014 and began serving Arkansas the following year. Cotton was born in Dardanelle, Arkansas, on May 13, 1977. He formerly served in the United States House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015.
Cotton was raised on an Arkansas cattle farm near the Ozark Mountains. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1998 and then went on to Harvard Law School, where he received his law degree in 2002. He briefly practised law privately after working as a clerk for the Fifth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals before joining in the United States Army in 2005. He became an infantry officer and attended ranger training after declining an opportunity to serve as a military lawyer. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan before returning to the United States as a platoon leader in the Old Guard, the military organisation in charge of conducting Arlington National Cemetery’s funeral rites. Among his many decorations, he received the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Cotton moved to work as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company after leaving active military in 2009. He ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2012 and comfortably won. He is well-known within the Tea Party movement. He pursued a conservative agenda after gaining office the next year, opposing same-sex marriage, gun control, and defense-spending cuts.
He also opposed many of President Barack Obama’s policies, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Cotton ran for the United States Senate in 2014, defeating Democratic incumbent Mark Pryor in a closely contested election. Cotton married Anna Peckham, an attorney, during the campaign.
Career
Cotton made news in March 2015 when he wrote an open letter to Iran’s leaders, which was signed by the majority of Republican senators, warning that any nuclear agreement reached with the Obama administration would require congressional approval. Cotton was the sole senator to vote against the proposed pact, which was easily ratified by Congress two months later. He endorsed Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, and Trump went on to win the general election. Following that, he backed a number of the president’s measures, including a huge tax reform plan that was passed in 2017. He praised Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal the following year.
The House of Representatives impeached Trump in 2019 after charges that he extorted a foreign country to investigate one of his political adversaries. The case was subsequently transferred to the Republican-controlled Senate, where Cotton voted in favour of Trump’s acquittal in February 2020. Trump was acquitted on a near-party-line vote.
The coronavirus was spreading over the world at the time, eventually causing a global pandemic. Cotton supported a $2 trillion assistance plan that was authorised in March as the country’s economy entered a depression comparable to the Great Depression. After a succession of high-profile cases involving African Americans being slain by police, nationwide protests occurred two months later, some of which turned violent. Cotton made a contentious appeal for the use of the US military to crush the protests. He was re-elected to the Senate in November 2020 for a second term.
