Zayre’s early acquisitions included the Hit or Miss business, which began operations in 1965 in Natick, Massachusetts. The store blossomed and swiftly expanded into a chain, attracting the attention of a giant by contrast, Zayre, within four years. Zayre acquired the Hit or Miss chain in 1969, initiating its foray into the upmarket off-priced apparel industry. Zayre’s timing was impeccable. During the 1970s recession, Hit or Miss’s results soared, prompting Zayre to consider expanding its off-priced upmarket clothes selling.
This recession also served as a catalyst for the T.J. Maxx concept. Bernard Cammarata, a former buyer and future president and CEO of TJX, was engaged by Zayre Corp. to capitalise on the opportunity for an off-priced upmarket clothes chain for the entire family. In March 1977, he launched the first T.J. Maxx in Auburn, Massachusetts.
Within six years of the first T.J. Maxx store’s opening, Zayre had discovered yet another outlet for the off-priced apparel market. Chadwick’s of Boston began selling select Hit or Miss goods via mail-order catalogues in 1983. Hit or Miss and Chadwick’s crossover operations enabled customers to inspect products prior to purchase and provided the ease of home shopping to the frequent buyer.
By the mid-1980s, Zayre had shifted its focus to value-priced niche retailing. In 1980, Hit or Miss and T.J. Maxx accounted for just 14% of the company’s operational income; by the first half of 1983, these operations accounted for over 46% of revenue. Simultaneously, Zayre was refurbishing its budget department stores and diversifying its product offering. Zayre entered the membership warehouse-club industry in 1984, introducing B.J.’s Wholesale Club. The following year, Zayre bought Home Club, Inc., a chain of home improvement stores. While neither of these enterprises became successful immediately, Hit or Miss and T.J. Maxx thrived.
By 1986, the number of Hit or Miss locations in the United States had increased to 420, with annual revenues exceeding $300 million. Around 70% of its portfolio was comprised of nationally recognised brands. The other 30% was made up of conventional wardrobe items such as turtlenecks and corduroy pants that Hit or Miss produced under its own private label. With this item combination, Hit or Miss was able to sell current fashion at a price point that was between 20% and 50% cheaper than that of most specialised boutiques.
In 1986, profits at the Zayre chain, which caters to low- to middle-income customers, fell, while those at T.J. Maxx, Hit or Miss, and Chadwick’s of Boston continued to expand. Zayre Corp. added 35 T.J. Maxx locations and 31 Hit or Miss locations in that year alone. Indeed, Zayre Corp.’s discount retailing chains were so successful that, by 1987, Zayre decided to consolidate them under a single name and provide them autonomy from the parent company’s declining fortunes.
