Tim Scott Wiki/Bio
Timothy Eugene Scott, an American politician and businessman, was born on September 19, 1965, and has served as the junior United States Senator for South Carolina since 2013. Scott, a Republican, was appointed to the United States Senate by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in 2013. After winning a special election in 2014, he kept his position and was re-elected to a full term in 2016.
Scott was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2010 for the 1st congressional district of South Carolina, where he served from 2011 to 2013. Scott was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly for one term (2009–2011) and the Charleston County Council from 1996 to 2008.
Scott has been a member of the United States Senate since January 2017, and the first African-American to serve in both chambers of Congress. He is the seventh African-American to be elected to the Senate, and the Republican Party’s fourth. He is the first African-American senator from South Carolina, the first African-American senator elected from the southern United States since 1881 (four years after Reconstruction ended), and the first African-American Republican to serve in the United States Senate since Edward Brooke left in 1979.
Scott ran for the at-large seat on the Charleston County Council in February 1995, which was vacated by Keith Summey, who resigned after being elected mayor of North Charleston. Scott won the seat as a Republican, receiving nearly 80% of the vote in the white-majority district, which has voted Republican since the late twentieth century. He was South Carolina’s first black Republican elected to any office since the late 1800s.
Scott co-sponsored a poverty reform measure in March 2011 that would deny food stamps to families whose wages had been reduced to the point of eligibility because a family member was on strike. In July 2011, he submitted legislation to deprive the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) of the authority to prevent firms from relocating to punish workers who join unions or strike. The legislation’s rationale is that government agencies should not be able to tell private businesses where they can operate. The legislation, according to Scott, is a commonsense proposal that would correct a flaw in federal labour policy while also benefiting the national and local economies.
The National Labor Relations Board recently rejected the relocation of a Boeing manufacturing plant from Washington to South Carolina. On June 28, 2020, Trump posted a video of one of his followers in the Villages, Florida, yelling “White power.” Later that day, in an interview with Jake Tapper, Scott chastised Trump for the retweet, calling it “indefensible,” and urging him to remove it, which he did.
