Timothy Richard “Tiff” Needell is a British racing driver and television broadcaster. He was born on October 29, 1951, in the United Kingdom. He has previously worked as a co-presenter for Top Gear and Fifth Gear and is now hosting the show Lovecars. After finishing his education at Ottershaw School, Needell continued his studies at City University in London and earned an honors degree in civil engineering there. His day work was that of a Structural Design Engineer with George Wimpey & Co., which employed him.

1970 Needell entered his first race while attending a driving school at Brands Hatch. He moved on to Formula Ford, and his success there was helped by using a Lotus 69 FF that he had won in a competition hosted by Autosport magazine. After some time, he decided to sell his Lotus and utilize the proceeds to purchase and race an Elden Mk10. The highlight of Needell’s time spent running in Formula Ford was when he bought a Crosslé 25F, the vehicle in which he went on to win the Kent Messenger FF Championship despite only running for half of the remaining season.

As a result of his accomplishment, McKinstry Racing offered him a drive in the Formula Ford 2000 Championship using a Hawke chassis. This drive was partially compensated. Needell was unbeatable in that vehicle and series, and those accomplishments helped him get a start in Formula 3. Needell was a front-runner for the rest of the 1970s in the British Formula 3 series and the Aurora British Formula One championship. Both of these competitions took place in the United Kingdom.

In 1979, he could not progress to the F1 World Championship due to the absence of the proper license, but he was back in 1980, driving two Grands Prix for Ensign and qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. 1980 he could not move to the F1 World Championship because he lacked the correct license. Unfortunately, he failed to complete the race due to an issue with the engine. As a direct result, he could not qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Will Gollop’s racing team have the Metro 6R4 he drove during his two years of competition in the British Rallycross Grand Prix? Those years were 1988 and 1989. Although he had a respectable performance in his first rallycross competition in 1988, when he finished fourth in the B-Final, the competition in 1989 was canceled due to severe fog following the practice sessions. In 1988, he finished fourth in the B-Final.

In 1981, Needell participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time, co-driving an Ibec-Hesketh 308LM with Tony Trimmer. They were unsuccessful again in 1982 when they were teamed with Bob Evans and Geoff Lees in an Aston Martin Nimrod NRA/C2, but they did not complete the race this time. Notwithstanding, Needell finished 17th the next year while driving a Porsche 956. In 1985, when moving the Aston Martin EMKA C84/1, Needell briefly held the lead in the 24-hour race, although he would finally finish 11th.

His most excellent finish at Le Mans was a third-place overall finish in 1990 when he shared the podium with David Sears and Anthony Reid while driving a Porsche 962C. After that, he raced for Nissan in the British Touring Car Championship for several years before returning to sports cars in 1995. He drove a Porsche in the Daytona 24 Hours and a Jaguar XJ220 at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

After that, he was the driver of the Lister Storm for the next five years, during which time they slipped from third place overall at Daytona in 1997 to twentieth place due to gearbox difficulties. In 1998, he competed in the British GT Championship and won the Silverstone Golden Jubilee Trophy race. His overall position in the championship was sixth. In the same year, he was supposed to participate in Lister’s attack on the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the vehicle didn’t pass scrutiny and didn’t qualify for the race.

In the year 2000, he drove for Lister once again. This time, he competed in three races of the British GT Championship and won every one of them. He first raced in the regular Lister entry and won at Donington Park. After that, he competed in two more rounds in the CSi privately entered Lister. Tiff won both Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone Circuit races, even though this vehicle wasn’t registered for championship points since it was entered so late.

In addition, he raced in one round of the FIA GT Championship in the year 2000 at Zolder. Since then, most of Needell’s career in auto racing has been spent competing in closed-wheel vehicles. He has had varied degrees of success in sports cars, classic racing, and touring cars, though. Because of an incident that he was involved in with Nigel Mansell during the 1993 TOCA shoot-out race at Donington Park, he became particularly famous.

Needell is a well-known face on British television, co-hosting the first season of Top Gear, which debuted on the BBC in 1987. He is also a journalist who covers the automotive industry. After the BBC decided to discontinue Top Gear in 2001 (the program was eventually brought back on air in 2002 with a revised format), Chris Needell and the rest of the cast decided to leave the network and join Channel 5 to develop and host a new automotive show called Fifth Gear.

In addition, Needell has co-presented “MPH” at Earls Court with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond in 2003, 2004, and 2005. In 2006, however, Needell co-presented the show alongside Clarkson and James May instead of Hammond (since Hammond was recuperating from an on-location accident in which he was in a rocket vehicle that turned over at maximum speed, putting him in a coma). In addition, he had a cameo appearance in the “Stars in Fast Cars” episode of the Top Gear Comic Relief special from 2005.

In 2009, he appeared in James May’s Toy Stories, which focused on constructing a Scalextric track around Brooklands, and he also went to James May’s Lego home. In 2011, he appeared on Top Gear, during which he drove the Ariel Atom V8 around the Top Gear Test Track in a competition against a BMW S1000RR. The section was performed humorously, and while May was thought to be driving the Atom V8, Needell was really behind the wheel.

In the most recent iteration of Top Gear, he was one of the numerous individuals thought to be playing the role of the mysterious racing driver known as “The Stig.”Needell had to make a comeback to Top Gear after a hiatus of nine years to prepare director Danny Boyle for his lap in the “Star In A Reasonably Priced Car” segment when it was finally discovered that the real identity of The Stig was Ben Collins. This revelation occurred late in the production process. Clarkson also referred to Needell as the “Emergency Stig” in the same episode.

On September 22, 2013, Needell appeared as a co-star in the episode of Driven – A Race Without Boundaries that Tommy Kendall hosted on Fox Sports 1. In 2016, Needell announced that Fifth Gear would no longer be airing. In 2018, Needell and others stated that a new season of Fifth Gear would be recorded and aired on Quest in September of the same year; however, the 2019 series has yet to have Needell in their presenter line-up. Quest will air the new series in September of the same year.

Needell presented on the new television program Lovecars: On The Road premiered in 2020. The show was based on the Lovecars YouTube channel, in which Needell and his co-presenter Paul Woodman explore Europe to test at least 50 different automobiles. At the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, on February 7, 1999, Needell drove a McLaren F1 XP5 prototype to establish the record for the fastest lap on a banked circuit 3.2 kilometers long and 2 miles in the distance. The highest speed accomplished was 200.8 mph (323.2 km/h), while the average rate completed was 195.3 mph (314.3 km/h).

Needell began his career as a broadcaster for Lovecars in 2018, primarily for the automobile evaluations they post on YouTube with co-host Paul Woodman. Notable reviews include the world’s first Tesla racing vehicle and a continuing series of Tiff Talks, in which regular automotive news is reviewed. Both of these reviews can be found on this website. He contributes to Modern Classic and maintains a motor racing news segment on Drive Tribe, where he also publishes regularly.

Needell has provided his voice acting services to the first and second games in the TOCA Touring Car series, developed by the British video game company Codemasters. His voice may also be heard in the computer games Ferrari Challenge and Le Mans 24 Hours, both developed by Eutechnyx. This company specializes in producing racing video games. In addition to that, you can see him driving an Aston Martin DBR9 in the video games Race Pro and GTR Evolution.

In addition, he provides the voice for the Road Angel road safety gadget and GPS speed camera warning system and serves as the face of their advertising campaigns. In addition to narrating several programs on the Discovery Channel, he was the person who announced the beginning of the high-speed Rita roller coaster at Alton Towers.

Customers may take advantage of a unique offer at Thruxton Circuit that allows them to spend £175 for three laps of high-speed driving and drifting instruction with Needell. His commentary and dialogue with the passenger can be heard throughout the laps, shot from inside the vehicle. In addition, Needell has hosted the world series of powerboat racing at several locations around the United Kingdom. Needell often provides commentary for Greenlight TV and Powerboat GP, casting voice-overs and interviewing drivers.

The pivotal outcome of the Powerboat F2 Series came to an exciting conclusion thanks to his most recent participation, which took place on September 1, 2013, in Nottingham and was part of the world championship race. He has three boys named Jack, Harry, and George, who reside with him in Wiltshire, together with his wife, Patsy. Chris, his younger brother, is the team manager for the Barwell Motorsports team, which currently competes in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3.

Pontypridd magistrates decided not to prosecute Needell for “failing to supply details about a speeding ticket” in November 2006, and they also agreed not to prosecute him for the related speeding offense. Nick Freeman, also known as Mr. Loophole, represented him in court. Nick Freeman is the attorney representing his former colleague Jeremy Clarkson in a case identical to this one. Those who attend the Thruxton track day and purchase any of the remaining racing experience tickets will be given an additional opportunity to join Formula 1.

Tiff, the driver for Le Mans and Fifth Gear, will be behind the wheel for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Racing fans still have time to sign up for this ultimate Grand Prix Experience. For just £200 per person, participants can drive a Porsche Cayman and a single-seater Formula Renault and enjoy a high-speed thrill ride as a passenger with our resident Stig. This event will help raise funds for organizations in desperate need of assistance.
