Tammy Duckworth Wiki/Bio
Tammy Duckworth (born March 12, 1968 in Bangkok, Thailand) is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2016 and began representing Illinois the next year. She previously served in the United States House of Representatives (2013–17).
Before relocating to Hawaii when she was 16, her family lived in Thailand and Singapore. They lived on public assistance for a short time, an experience that resonated with voters when Duckworth ran for office.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1989 from the University of Hawaii and a master’s degree in international affairs in 1992 from George Washington University, where she joined the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).
Career
Duckworth eventually joined the National Guard and began training as a helicopter pilot. She was called to active duty and sent to Iraq in 2004 while working on a doctorate at Northern Illinois University. Duckworth’s helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, and she lost both legs and nearly her right arm, which was saved after a 13-hour emergency surgery.
Duckworth was awarded the Purple Heart in 2004 while undergoing extensive rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She retired from the military as a lieutenant colonel in 2014. Capella University awarded her a doctorate in human services the following year.
Duckworth ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2006. She later served as the state’s Director of Veteran Affairs (2006–09). Duckworth became assistant secretary of Veterans Affairs after former Illinois senator Barack Obama was elected president (2009–11). She resigned to run for the House of Representatives from Illinois’ 8th congressional district in 2012, defeating her Republican opponent by a 10-point margin.
