Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin, an American lawyer and politician, was born on February 11, 1962, and has served as the junior United States Senator representing Wisconsin since January 2013. She was a member of the Democratic Party who served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 78th district.
Baldwin was elected to the US Senate in 2012, defeating Republican candidate Tommy Thompson. Baldwin was re-elected in 2018, defeating Republican candidate Leah Vukmir. Baldwin was the class valedictorian at Madison West High School in 1980. She graduated from Smith College with a B.A. in 1984 and the University of Wisconsin Law School with a J.D. in 1989. From 1989 through 1992, she worked as a private lawyer. Baldwin first ran for politics when she was 24 years old, when she was elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors, a position she maintained until 1994. She also served on the Madison City Council for a year to fill a vacancy in the adjacent district.
Career
When U.S. Congressman Scott Klug of Wisconsin’s 2nd district announced his retirement in 1998, Baldwin decided to run for the seat. With a plurality of 37 percent of the vote, she won the Democratic primary. She defeated Republican nominee Josephine Musser by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent in the general election.Baldwin was Wisconsin’s first female member of Congress. She was also the first openly gay person and the first open lesbian to be elected to the House of Representatives.
Baldwin ran as the Democratic candidate against Tommy Thompson, the Republican contender who had previously served as governor and Secretary of Health and Human Services. She launched her candidacy in a video distributed to supporters on September 6, 2011. She ran unopposed in the primary election and talked about tax policy, campaign finance reform, and equality in the United States at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

In May 2019, Baldwin and eight other Democratic senators sent a letter to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue criticising the agency for buying pork from JBS USA, calling it “counterproductive and contradictory” for companies to receive funding from “US taxpayer dollars intended to help American farmers struggling with this administration’s trade policy.” “Ensure these commodities acquisitions are carried out in a manner that most favours the bottom line of American farmers—not the commercial interests of foreign multinationals,” the senators requested.
