Super Junior Wiki/Bio
Super Junior is a South Korean boy band best known for their smash K-pop track “Sorry, Sorry,” which was released in 2009. Super Junior (aka SJ or SuJu) debuted in 2005 under the production and management organisation S.M. Entertainment and were rapidly popular in their home country and other Asian pop music markets. The initial plan was for Super Junior to have a revolving cast of characters, with the band name changing to correspond to each year — for example, Super Junior 05 would become Super Junior 06 — but once the first round of rotations was completed, an addition to the band, rather than a switch, took place, and the group eventually grew to include a whopping 13 members. Leeteuk, Heechul, Han Geng (the only Chinese member; he was chosen from a pool of applicants to appeal to a wider Asian market), Yesung, Kang-In, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kibum were among Super Junior’s first 12 members.
In December of 2005, they released their self-titled debut album. Following the success of their second song, “Miracle,” on Asian charts, the decision was made to keep the group (plus one) and remove the year designation from the name. Super Junior’s 13th member, Kyuhyun, was joined to the roster in 2006, and their following single, “U,” was published. The band earned another number one hit and won a slew of honours for their efforts. Super Junior-K.R.Y., Super Junior-T, and Super Junior-M, their most successful side project, were formed in 2007 after the greater Super Junior split into many subgroups.
Due to an auto accident, the main Super Junior’s next full-length, Don’t Don, was delayed, but when it was released in September of 2007, it became Super Junior’s first number one album. Before releasing their third album, Sorry Sorry, in 2009, Super Junior expanded their regional recognition with a multi-city Asian tour in 2008. The album was a top seller in Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, China, and the Philippines, and inspired the international hit single of the same name.
Following the success of Sorry Sorry, Kibum, Han Geng, and Kang-In quit Super Junior for various reasons, leaving the group to eleven members for the release of Bonamana, their fourth album. The next year, Mr. Simple (aka A-CHa) debuted, topping the Korean charts and reaching number three on the Billboard World Albums chart. Kang-reappearance In’s was highlighted by the release of Sexy, Free & Single (aka Spy) in the summer of 2012. After the success of their debut Japanese album, Hero, Super Junior shifted their sound to include R&B and funk elements for Mamacita, even enlisting American producer Teddy Riley for the title single.
In 2015, the band released their ninth album Devil, which was quickly followed by the reissue Magic, which included new songs like “Magic” and “You Got It.” In 2017, the band returned over two years later with PLAY, their fourth Top Three debut on the Billboard World Albums chart. PLAY was repackaged as REPLAY in April of the following year, spawning the trilingual (Korean, Spanish, and English) hit “Lo Siento,” which charted well on Billboard’s Latin Digital Singles chart. Another Latin crossover came in October 2018 with the release of the mini-album One More Time, which featured a cover of the title tune by the Mexican band Reik.
Time Slip, their ninth album, was released in 2019, just months after Kang-In left Super Junior just days before they played at a global music festival in Saudi Arabia. Time Slip was supported by singles “Show,” “Somebody New,” “The Crown,” and “I Think I,” which all charted in the Top 10 in the United States. In March 2021, they released The Renaissance, their tenth full-length album, which was produced by Lee Soo-man. The album debuted at number one on the South Korean album chart.
