For more than three decades, Sue Dodge has been the four-time winner of the Dove Award. A consistent, dynamic singer whose energy is matched only on stage by her off-stage character, Sue is the real deal. She shared the stage with the most legendary pioneers of gospel music, and in time she became one.
Sue first started chanting at the age of 13 and her career in professional music began at 19, as the young former Miss Arkansa (then Sue Chenault, her maiden name) joined an early ensemble known as The Downings. The dynamic soprano was part of the first Incarney of The Downings, with hits like “I’m Free,” “I Believe What the Bible Says” and “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” which the group immediately began influencing gospel music.
Sue Chenault was a gorgeous young girl fifty years ago, who loved Jesus and was fond of singing. She sang her very first TV solo at the tender age of 5 and performed with The Miller Trio on KATV, Channel 7, each day at the age of 16. At the age of 18, she was crowned Miss Benton and in the Miss Arkansas Beauty Pageant she was elected “Miss Congeniality.” Its inner beauty and love of the Lord shines through her lovely smile and contagious joy, known both on and off stage.
In 1969, after hearing her demo tape, The Downings flew to Nashville and hired her on site at the age of 19. The legendary Speer family invited her to join their ministry after 18 months with The Downings. In her years with The Speer Family, Sue has received four Dove Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and since that time she has been invited for her years with the Speer Family to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Sue met the love of her life, Amos Dodge, four years after joining the The Speer Family. Your love storey is one of the most touching and humorous stories of “love at first sight.” This year, Amos and Sue celebrated 45 years of marriage. Capital Church was established in the suburbs of Washington DC by Amos and Sue in 1979. Forty years later, the Church of Capital is flourishing and reaching nations for Christ. In the same year, they founded Lincoln Memorial Easter Sunrise Service, which now brings together over 8,000 people to celebrate the resurrected Savior every year on Easter Sunday, at dawn break. The sunrise service #5 was named by Washington Magazine on their bucket list of activities to do on visiting Washington DC.
During those years, Sue met a beautiful young pastor called Amos Dodge in the audience one night. Short long storey… Amos swept her feet away and they’re still very much in love 36 years later. Their rock-solid marriage is one of their greatest achievements and joys.
Career
Sue’s marriage with Amos was a transition from her dream job to another real dream… a marvellous family and an opportunity to stand up to her husband in pastoral ministry. She enthusiastically accepted these roles while still enjoying singing opportunities in accordance with her schedule. When the series Homecoming began in the early nineties and the Homecoming concert visits required a great deal of Sue’s time, on Sunday morning she made it a priority to serve her family in the Church, although she had come home from the concert during the Sunday morning’s wee hours.
Her heart for service, her unbelievable love for people and her Savior’s genuine connection have made Sue’s unique heritage both in gospel music and in her home ministry. Her daughter, Sue and Amos now help Sue and Amos lead the church with her son-in-law Travis (Goodman). And they also helped two lovely little girls to become grandparents, Sydney and Madeline, who added more love to their life’s rich tapestry.
After 60 years of age, Sue has now seen another dream-come-true… her very first DVD release, 22 June 2010! After countless recordings, as a solo artist or both, her debut DVD, The Best of Sue Dodge combines Sue’s most beloved Homecoming series performances to tell the wonderful storey of a former beauty competitor, for whom God had unbelievable and very specific plans.
