The famed American actor Steven Seagal holds a 7th-day black belt in Aikido. He began in Japan as an Aikido instructor. Success followed him all the way through Los Angeles, California, when the movie ‘Above the Law’ offered him a part. He then appeared in other movies, including ‘Under Siege,’ ‘On Deadly Ground’ and ‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory.’ Although Hollywood didn’t feel overnight, he made a mark as a great martial artist whose skills had been utilised in martial arts films. He then appeared for a period of time in a variety of low-income direct-to-video films and came back on large screen with the movie ‘Machete.’ He also worked as a reserve deputy sheriff, apart from acting. He focused more on his business activities when he took a hiatus, one of which is called ‘Seagal Enterprises.’ It’s also known for his own ‘Steven Seagal: Lawman’ TV series. In addition, he is an environmentalist, fighter for animal rights and supporter of the Tibetan independence cause.
Steven Frederic Seagal was born on 10 April 1952, to Samuel Steven and Patricia in Lansing, Michigan, USA. His mother was a doctor and his dad a high school teacher. He is a Jewish-Russian, his father’s and his mother’s English, German and Dutch background.
He moved to Fullerton where he studied at Buena Park’s Buena Park High School.
He ended up in a restaurant called ‘The Wagon Wheel’ as a dishwasher. The cook, who was a Japanese Shotokan karate expert, saw him as he was exceptionally quick on his feet and decided to give him some training on the principles of karate In 1964, he then studied Aikido with Harry Kiyoshi Ishisaka. During his late adolescence he came to Japan with his father. For military reasons, he visited the country and decided to reside permanently in Japan. He quickly graduated in Aikido with a seventh dan degree and Shihan and became Japan’s first foreigner to operate an aikido dojo.
His first stop in Hollywood was when he was a coordinator of martial arts for the 1982 movie The Challenge.
After he became the chairman of Tenshin Aikido in Osaka, in 1983 he relocated to the USA, where in North Hollywood he founded an Aikido dojo. He worked for the film ‘Never Say Never Again’ in the same year as a martial arts coordinator.
In 1995 he played in the sequel to ‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory.’ The picture became one of his most successful commercial flicks. In ‘The Glimmer Man’ and ‘Executive Decision’ he starred the next year.
In 1997, he produced a film named ‘Fire Down Below,’ in which he assumed the role of an EPA agent combating toxic trash disposing of moguls. The film didn’t do well at the box office and the film concluded its contract with “Warner Bros.” In 1998 he starred in the film ‘The Patriot,’ a direct-to-video picture he created. He’s been featured in films such as “Exit Wounds,” “Ticker,” ‘Half Past Dead,” “The Foreigner,’ “Out for a Kill,” “Belly of the Beast” between 2001 and 2003.
He is a great guitarist, besides being a martial artist and actor. His first CD ‘Songs from the Crystal Cave’ was published in 2005. The same year, a number of tracks from his album were shown in the movie ‘Into the Sun.’ He released his second album ‘Mojo Priest’ in April 2006. He spent the rest of the year touring with his band to support the album through the USA and Europe.
As also a Reserve Deputy Chief in the Parish of Jefferson, he decided to take use of his employment as an enforcement officer and started shooting for his ‘Steven Seagal: Lawman’ show, which aired and ran for several seasons in 2009. He also appeared in ‘The Keeper’ and ‘Driven to Kill, beside his programme. In 2010, with the movie ‘Machete,’ he returned to the mainstream of Hollywood and played the role of ‘Rogelio Torrez.’ He also performed in ‘Sheep Impact’ the same year.
He appears between 2011 and 2014 in ‘Born to Raise Hell,’ ‘Maximum Conviction,’ ‘Gutshot Straight,’ and ‘Force of Execution.’Seagal was mainly seen in action films such as ‘Absolution’ (2015), “End of the Gun” (2016), ‘The Perfect Weapon’ (2016), ‘Cartels’ (2017) and ‘Attrition’ in the middle and late 2010s (2018).
In 2019, he participated in a set cast for the film “General Commander.” The same year, he also portrayed the leading part of ‘Augustino ‘Finn’ Adair’ in the action picture ‘Beyond the Law’ by James Cullen Bressack.
