They are the St. Louis Blues, an American professional ice hockey team that is based in the city of St. Louis, Missouri and plays in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). During the Stanley Cup finals (1968–70 and 2019), the Blues have been to four finals and won one title (2019).
One of the six teams that joined the NHL in 1967–68 was the St. Louis Blues, whose name comes from the famous “St. Louis Blues” song by W.C. Handy. Scotty Bowman was the Blues’ first head coach, and Barclay Plager was a hard-nosed defenseman. The Blues made it to the Stanley Cup finals in their first season, but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games that were decided by just one goal. During the next two seasons, the Blues won the NHL West Division, which was made up of the six expansion teams.
Then, the winner of that division’s original six teams won the Stanley Cup (Montreal again in 1969, the Boston Bruins in 1970). However, the team’s good start didn’t last, and the Blues were much less successful in the 1970s. Between 1970–71 and 1979–80, St. Louis only won two games and made it past the first round of the playoffs once.
In 1980–81, the Blues, thanks to the play of left wing Brian Sutter and centre Bernie Federko, won 45 games, which was the best record in the team’s history up until that point. They also won a division title, but their playoff problems continued as they lost in their second postseason game. Six times over the next eight seasons, the Blues had a losing record, but they still made the playoffs every year. Brett Hull came to St. Louis in the 1987–88 season.
He would become a star right wing for the team. He would go on to score the most goals in the history of the Blues over the course of his 10 full seasons with the team. He would also follow his father, Bobby Hull, into the Hall of Fame, but he led the team only to the second round of the playoffs during that time.
This year, the St. Louis Blues had the best record in the NHL thanks to right wing Pavol Demitra and defensemen Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis. But the Blues were beaten by the San Jose Sharks, who came in last place. The next season, the Blues came back from that disappointment by making it to the conference finals, where they lost to the eventual champion, the Colorado Avalanche, who went on to win the title. For 25 years, St. Louis was a team that went to the playoffs. That was the third-longest streak in league history at the time.
Over that time, the Blues didn’t make it to the Stanley Cup finals and only made it to the second round of the playoffs twice. Streak: The Blues mostly finished their seasons with win-loss records close to.500, but only made the playoffs once (in 2008–09, when they lost in the first round). Head coach Ken Hitchcock was brought in 14 games into the 2011–12 season, and the struggling team rallied around the new man.
The Blues won 49 games and won the franchise’s first division title in 14 years. However, the Blues lost in the second round of the playoffs that year, which was followed by first-round upset losses in the next three years. St. Louis made it to its first conference final in 14 years during the 2015–16 season. The Blues lost to the San Jose Sharks in the final.
St. Louis Blues Biography/Wiki
Craig Berube, a strong defence, and rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington helped the team come together and finish second in their league. To make it to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 49 years, the team won three closely fought playoff series. None of them lasted less than six games, and the team won all three.
There, the Blues won a seven-game series against the Boston Bruins to become the first team in their history to win a championship. There were two short seasons next because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In both, the Blues made the playoffs but lost in the first round.
St. Louis is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is next to, but not part of, St. Louis County. It is on the west bank of the Mississippi River, which is bridged there at several places. It is next to East St. Louis, Illinois, which is just south of the Missouri River’s confluence with the Mississippi River. Since 1876, when the city became its own administrative entity, the city’s boundaries have stayed the same. It is, however, the largest and most populous metro area in the state.
There are suburbs in Missouri and Illinois. Chesterfield, Florissant, Kirkwood, St. Charles, and University City are in Missouri, and Alton, Belleville, East St. Louis, and Granite City are in Illinois.
