William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who has had a great deal of success as both a member of the group known as The Miracles and as a solo artist. His stage name is “Smokey know him.” “Is Smokey know him” is the name of his stage persona. Through a stellar career that spanned over sixty years, he has created an enduring legacy that cannot be surpassed. He was born and reared in the city of Motor City and had a great interest in music at a very young age. When he was still in his teens, he put together his first band, which was a doo-wop ensemble named the Five Chimes. Over the following several years, before settling on The Miracles as its title, the band went through various incarnations until finally settling on The Miracles.

In 1959, they signed a recording deal with Tamla Records, which Motown Records would later absorb. Tamla Records was renamed Motown Records after that acquisition. Robinson wrote singles for the group when they were one of Motown’s early clients and records for other Motown singers, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and the Supremes. This contributed to Motown being a brand that is well-known all over the globe. In 1965, the group that had up to that point only been known as The Miracles changed their name to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles as their official moniker. After leaving the music business in 1972, he returned the following year as a solo artist and has been active in the business ever since. Robinson’s attempt to win back his audience was first ineffective, but it was ultimately successful.

After selling Motown Records in 1990, he severed his ties with the record label and has since gone on to work for various other music firms, such as Universal and Verve. During an interview in 2012, Robinson said that his favorite uncle and godfather was the one who first referred to him by the nickname “Smokey.” Robinson also mentioned that this uncle was the one who gave him the name “Smokey.” When asked how he got the moniker “Smokey,” he shared this information with the audience. On February 19, 1940, in the city of Detroit, in the state of Michigan, William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. was born to Flossie and William Robinson. His mother was of African American and French lineage, while his father was of African American ancestry. His mother and father were both of mixed race.

Rose Ella Jones and Geraldine Burston are his sisters. Also, there is Rose Ella Jones. Rose Ella Jones is the name of his second sibling sister. His parents encouraged and supported all of their son’s activities, whether they were intellectual or athletic, even though they did not have a lot of money. He was a great athlete and an above-average student in the classroom. When he first showed hints of his musical talent, he was a student at Northern High School. He went on to pursue a career in music. After some time, he concluded that he would prefer to pursue a music profession than continue his electrical engineering education.

Consequently, he quit college after just two months of enrollment. In high school, he formed a doo-wop group with his childhood friend Ronald White and another student named Pete Moore. They dubbed their band the Five Chimes. In 1957, they concluded that they wanted to change the band’s name to The Matadors. During the same year, Bobby Rogers joined the group as a band member. Soon after that, Bobby’s cousin Claudette became a member of the band, and in 1958, the lineup was completed with the addition of guitarist Marv Tarplin. They began their career by performing in various locations across Detroit and ultimately changed their name to The Miracles.

At the outset of their career, the Miracles were denied production by different music companies, one of which was Brunswick Records. In August of 1957, Robinson and the other group members were introduced to composer Berry Gordy for the very first time. After their first encounter, Robinson would count Gordy as one of his closest friends. When Gordy heard him perform or read one of his songs, he instantly became a devoted follower. The debut recording of The Miracles, “Got a Job,” was released by End Records and made accessible to the general audience. The Miracles were one of the first performers to sign with Berry Gordy’s newly established company, Tamla Records, which Gordy had established in 1959. Gordy had launched Tamla Records. It wasn’t until 1960 that the band released “Shop Around,” which would become their first successful single.

After climbing to the top of the Billboard R&B chart, it sold over a million copies. The band would go on to produce a total of eight studio albums under the moniker the Miracles; the first was named “Hi… We’re the Miracles” and was released in 1961. They created twelve albums after changing their name to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and rebranding themselves. Robinson is well-known for his work as a composer; he is responsible for the songs “You’ve Got a Hold on Me,” “Mickey’s Monkey,” “I Second That Emotion,” “Baby Baby Don’t Cry,” and “The Tears of a Clown,” among others. Robinson was contracted to Motown Records while also writing songs for other artists in the Motown stable. Artists and groups such as Brenda Holloway, Mary Wells, and the Temptations recorded versions of songs such as “You Beat Me to the Punch,” “My Guy,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready,” “When I’m Gone,” and “Operator.

By 1969, Robinson had already begun to entertain the idea of permanently withdrawing from the industry. After the release of his last album with the Miracles, which was named “Flying High Together,” he quit helping raise his two children with Rogers and finally departed from the music industry. The ensemble and he gave their last performance together in the nation’s capital in 1972. This event took place in 1972. On March 20, 2009, some 37 years after the group had been nominated for the first award, they were finally recognized with their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It wasn’t until 1973 that he returned to the music business by releasing his first solo album, “Smokey.” This CD included cover renditions of the Miracles’ tribute songs “Sweet Harmony” and “Baby Come Close,” and those songs were included on the album’s track listing.

The album “Pure Smokey” did not become accessible until after a year had passed. However, financially speaking, the album was not a success, and many people had doubts about Robinson’s future as a solo artist due to this. In addition, he was working at Motown as the vice president. This position demanded a lot of his time, and he had been doing the responsibilities associated with that job. Because of this, the quality of his songwriting suffered directly. In the following years, he made a point to debunk the allegations his adversaries had brought against him continually. Following the record company’s acquisition by MCA in 1990, he parted ways with Motown. Only one album, “Double Good Everything,” was issued by him during the whole decade of the 1990s.

Since then, he has released the albums Food for the Soul in 2004, Timeless Love in 2006, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun in 2009, and Now And Then in 2010, as well as “Smokey & Friends” in 2014. In more recent years, namely in 2017, he released an album titled “Christmas every day.” In 1978, Robinson released his sixth solo album titled “Love Breeze,” which was distributed by Motown and was also the year it was released. There were eight songs on the album, with four songs on each side of the record. Sonny Burke was the one who was in charge of the arrangement for the form. Robinson is most known throughout his career for this collection of work, which has garnered widespread acclaim over the years. In 1987, when it was released, his album “One Heartbeat” was at the top of the Billboard R&B albums chart.

It had eleven songs, one of which, named “Just to See Her,” was responsible for Robinson’s Grammy victory. After determining that the album has sold more than 900,000 copies in the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) bestowed upon it the Gold certification. In 1988, Smokey Robinson was presented with his first Grammy for the song “Just to See Her,” which was included on the album “One Heartbeat.” This song was put forth for consideration for an award in the category of Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In 1991, he was honored with the Grammy Legend Award, and in 1999, he was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the music industry. After being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the previous year, in 1987, he was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame the following year, in 1989.

Throughout the 138th Commencement Convocation at Howard University in May 2006, he was honored for receiving the Doctor of Music degree honoris causa. The degree was delivered to him during the ceremony. On December 3, 2006, Robinson was observed in the East Room of the White House by the Kennedy Center in the presence of Dolly Parton, Zubin Mehta, Steven Spielberg, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Kennedy Center was the place where the event was held. Throughout his life, Smokey Robinson has been married twice to different people. He tied the knot with Claudette Rogers, also a member of the Miracles at the time, on November 7th, 1959. This was his very first time getting married. They were eager to have a family as soon as possible, but Rogers suffered through seven unsuccessful pregnancies because she was under so much pressure from her work as a touring artist.

In 1968, the couple brought their first child, a boy named Berry Robinson, into the world. Rogers ultimately gave birth to her and Robinson’s baby, Tamla, after another year since their pregnancy began. His first marriage lasted for 27 years and was fraught with conflict the whole time it was in effect. After Robinson had an affair outside of his marriage in 1974, which would later form the subject of the song “The Agony & the Ecstasy,” the couple went their ways for some time for a temporary separation. Robinson’s third child, a son named Trey, was born to a different woman in 1984. This occurred when Robinson was married to Rogers. Robinson’s third kid was a boy named Trey. After this information was made public, Robinson apologized for his actions and began the official process of terminating his relationship with Rogers. 1986 was the year that marked the last chapter in the couple’s divorce proceedings.

He wed Frances Gladney, who would become his second wife, in May of 2002. Since 1972, he has not had any red meat in any form whatsoever. He is someone who engages in something that is often referred to as transcendental meditation. Robinson and the legendary singer Diana Ross spent their formative years in the same community when they were young. After a long time passed, he eventually let slip the fact that the two of them had dated briefly before his marriage to Rogers. The Beatles were such huge fans of Robinson’s music that they covered many of his songs and even made several attempts to compose songs in the same style as Robinson. Despite this, George’s enthusiasm for the musician never wavered during their relationship.
