The Bronx, in New York City, is located on the mainland. His name is Robin Beck, and he is an American singer. As a result of the Coca-Cola commercial in which her song “First Time” was featured, she topped the singles chart in the United Kingdom in 1988, and Austria, Germany, Norway, Netherlands, and Switzerland in 1989.
Former vocalist for Melissa Manchester, Chaka Khan, and Leo Sayer, American Robin Beck, and German charts shortly rounded the 1988 song “The First Time,” a commercial song for Coca-Cola. Despite the contributions by such experienced songwriters as Desmond Child and Diane Warren, her subsequent album Trouble or Nothin’ (1989) did not generate much interest. The songs released as individuals also failed — Cher had made ” Save Up All Your Tears” famous and five years later Jennifer Rush would cover “Tears in the Rain.” In 1992, Beck released her second album and a minor hit in Germany became the single “In My Heart to Stay.” In advertising spots for a large fast food chain, her 1994 song, “Close to You.”
ROBIN BECK first came to the fore with the Coca-Cola theme “The First Time,” an international hit. Although this should be the opening of the general public for the lady’s work, Beck had been on the music scene for quite some time after releasing his debut album, the heavily Disco oriented ‘Sweet Talk,’ in 1979. This soon forgotten opus, with backing vocals from no less than Luther Vandross, included a cover of ‘Hello It’s Me’ by TODD RUNDGREN.
The 1989 album, ‘Trouble Or Nothin’ by DESMOND CHILD, contains guest contributions from STEVE LUKATHER, GUY MANN DUDE and KISS Front Man’s vocals, including PAUL STANLEY. The album also includes a version of the KISS track ‘Hide Your Heart’ and a wealth of other external contributions by Child’s Pens, Diane Warren and ALICE COOPER. Former OZZY OSBOURNE bassist PHIL SOUSSAN contributed ‘First Time.’ Probably the best track of the record, ‘Sleeping With The Enemy’ has Robin Beck’s own credit. Beck also attended Norwegian artist OLE EVENRUDE’s One Size Fits All album the same year.
Career
‘Human Instinct,’ Robins second album, was launched on the D.S.B. label in 1992, featuring a host of leading session players. Included in the backing vocals are TOTO’s Jeffen Porcaro, the former CHOPPER keyboardist Kim Bullard, Guitar players Tim Pierce, MICHAEL LANDAU, Lee Ritenour and Michael Thompson and Myriam Valle. The Lennon brothers of VENICE fame also support vocals on a number of tracks.
While Robin has taken a greater role as a songwriter on ‘Human Instinct,’ external contributions continue to dominate the album. CLIMIE FISHER wrote ‘In My Heart To Stay.’ The Sue Shifrin, David Cassidy and MARK SPIRO co-write ‘Treat Me Like You Used To.’ The JOURNEY keyboard player JONATHON CAIN and Mark Spiro penned ‘If it doesn’t hurt.’ ‘Next time I see heaven’ is the collaboration of Robin Beck and GLEN BURTNICK, while “Will to live” was written with HEART’s sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson by I-Tom TEN’s Kelly and Billy Steinberg. In the meantime, Austrian female Rocker VERENA has made the most of Beck’s former ‘The First Time’ hit, using it to win the ‘Starmania’ TV talent search programme.
Beck returned with ‘Do You Miss Me’ in 2005 to Italian Frontiers in Europe, King Records in Japan and Locomotive/Ryko in the USA with a welcome certificate. The record would, of course, be enhanced by the strong support of DESMOND CHILD, Amy Sky, Chris Pelcer, MICHAEL BOLTON and MARC JORDAN donating compounds. The husband JAMES CHRISTIAN and LISA DALBELLO gave backing vocals. In the track “Easy’s Getting Harder,” she also featured on RADIOACTIVE guitarist Tommy DENANDER’s solo album “Taken.” Brooklyn-born singer who became a sensation with her 1989 single “First Time” in Germany.
