Robert Zemeckis Wiki/Bio

American filmmaker and screenwriter Robert Lee Zemeckis (born May 14, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.) is known for making films that appeal to a wide audience while utilizing cutting-edge visual effects.

Zemeckis earned his bachelor’s degree in filmmaking from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1973, where he met future screenplay collaborator Robert Gale. Even before Zemeckis graduated, Steven Spielberg, the renowned American director, saw his work and produced I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Zemeckis and Gale’s first feature film (1978).

Filmed by Zemeckis, the comedy follows three young girls who are Beatles aficionados. There was a sequel to 1941 (1979), which was written by Zemeckis and Gale, and which was directed by Steven Spielberg; in addition, he worked as an executive producer on a number of other Zemeckis films including his next, Used Cars (1980).

The 1984 action-adventure comedy Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, was Zemeckis’s first major commercial hit as a director. He gained a reputation for visual inventiveness with Back to the Future (1985), a time-traveling teen comedy, and its sequels, which he cemented with Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), a picture that mixed live-action with cartoon characters.

A number of historical figures, including John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley, cross paths with Forrest Gump in Forrest Gump (1994). To save money, Zemeckis repurposed old news material by splicing in bits of actor Tom Hanks. Zemeckis won the Academy Award for best director for his work on the picture, which was released in 1969.

As previously mentioned, Zemeckis re-cast Tom Hanks in both Cast Away (2000) and The Polar Express (2004). The latter represented the director’s first screenwriting credit in over a decade. It used motion-capture animation, a method that involves filming real actors and then digitally converting their actions into animated visuals.

Beowulf (2007) and A Christmas Carol (2007) both benefited from Zemeckis’ usage of the same style (2009). The Walk (2015) tells the story of Frenchman Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the World Trade Center’s twin buildings in 1974, and Flight (2012) tells the story of an airplane pilot (Denzel Washington) whose heroic acts on the job are overshadowed by the disclosure of his substance usage.

What Lies Beneath: The Films of Robert Zemeckis was the title of a retrospective held in 2015 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, which showcased the director’s cinema and television oeuvre.

‘Forrest Gump,’ a 1994 American film starring Tom Hanks as an intellectually challenged man (and chronicling 30 years of his life from the 1950s to the early 1980s), was a critical and commercial success and won six Academy Awards, including best picture.

As the film opens, Forrest Gump (Hanks) is seen sitting on a bench in Savannah, Georgia, relating his life story to random people who happen to be seated next to him. In a series of flashbacks, the story is revealed. Forrest (Michael Conner Humphreys) grew up in Greenbow, Alabama, with his single mother (Sally Field). His mother has instilled in him the belief that he is no different from anyone else, despite his IQ of 75 and his use of braces on his legs.

Only Jenny (Hannah Hall), a little girl on Gump’s first day of school, will let him sit next to her on the bus. One day, while running from bullies, his braces come off and he realizes he has the ability to sprint. This talent lands him a spot on his high school’s football squad and a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. Eventually, he matures into a straightforward, morally pure adult.

Gump enlists in the United States Army and is subsequently deployed to the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Dan and fellow recruit Bubba Blue (Mykelti Williamson) convince him to operate a shrimp boat together once he is discharged from the military, and Gump develops a close relationship with both of them (Gary Sinise).

Lieutenant Dan is injured and Bubba is dead, but Gump saves his life and wounds, Lieutenant Dan, in the process. Gump receives the Medal of Honor for his bravery in combat. In the meantime, he learns how to play table tennis well enough to overcome Chinese table tennis champions and become famous for his abilities. Lieutenant Dan (Robin Wright), a bitter and alcoholic, and Gump’s former girlfriend, Jenny (after he was discharged), both turn up during an antiwar demonstration. He returns to Alabama later and purchases a shrimping boat there as an alternative.

To help his friend succeed, Lt. Dan sets up the enormously popular Bubba Gump Shrimp Co with him. The two men become rich when Lieutenant Dan decides to invest the money in Apple Computer rather than hold onto it for himself. Gump runs across the country for three and a half years after Jenny rejects his marriage proposal before coming home. Jenny then introduces her husband to their son as Gump (Haley Joel Osment). Jenny dies of what appears to be hepatitis C shortly after Gump and Jenny get married. During the course of the movie, Gump is entangled in a slew of historical events that took place around the same time period.

Winston Groom’s 1986 novel of the same name served as the inspiration for Forrest Gump. A “best hits” soundtrack and computer-generated effects were employed by director Robert Zemeckis to place Forrest in historical events, such as meetings with presidents and celebrities. Many people like the movie because of its lighthearted tone, but others found it to be cliché-ridden. For his depiction of Gump, Hanks received a second straight Best Actor Oscar.

The movie was Haley Joel Osment’s feature film debut, and it launched the career of actor Gary Sinise, who was previously best known for his stage work. With his Lt. Dan Band in 2003, Sinise began performing at USO gigs and veteran-benefit events. In 1996, a casual seafood restaurant franchise called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. was launched in honor of the movie’s fictional shrimping operation.

The University of Southern California (USC) is one of the nation’s largest and best-funded research institutions. In addition to the Southern California Earthquake Center and the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, it also runs about a hundred other research institutes as well.

There are over 20 libraries at the university, and among its resources is a significant film and television collection. Additionally, the university has campuses in northeastern Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Washington, D.C., in addition to the flagship University Park campus. On Santa Catalina Island, there is a marine science research facility.

In 1880, the Methodist Episcopal Church formed the University of Southern California, which opened the following year. Ralph Tyler Flewelling, a philosopher who came to USC in 1917, helped turn the university into a personalist stronghold. One of the first schools in the country for international relations and public administration was established at the university in the 1920s, along with an early filmmaking course. In 1923, the first doctorate was granted. In 1926, the institution formally renounced its religious affiliation. In 1963, architect Konrad Wachsmann became a member of the school’s faculty and helped establish its Ph.D. program in construction science.

Athletes from the university have gone on to represent their country at the Olympics, which is unheard of for American schools. Some notable USC alumni include sprinter Charlie Paddock, shot-putter Parry O’Brien, and footballer O.J. Simpson. Composer Charles Wakefield Cadman and actor John Wayne are among the other notable alumni/es that has come out of the film school.

In the United States, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Beverly Hills gives out a variety of prizes each year, including the Oscar, to honor outstanding performances in the film business. A gold-plated statuette known as an Oscar was awarded to victors when the awards were first presented in 1929.

A total of 24 categories are used to select the winners: best picture; actor or actress; supporting actor or actress; actor or actress; supporting actor or actress; directing; original screenplay or adapted screenplay; cinematography; production design; editing; original score; original song; costume design; makeup and hairstyling; sound mixing; sound editing; visual effects; foreign-language film; animated feature; animated short; live-action short; documentary feature and documentary short; and short documentary.

Other awards given by the academy include the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for technological contributions as well as scientific and technical ones like the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for excellence in production and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. These awards are not given annually, however. A new yearly category for “exceptional accomplishment in popular film” was established by the academy in August of last year, and it will make its debut at the 2019 awards show. In response to the backlash and confusion, the academy, however, has decided to put off the introduction of the new classification.

For a film to be eligible for an award, it must be shown for at least one week at a commercial theatre in Los Angeles County between January 1 and December 31 at midnight that year, for paid admission. A few exceptions to this rule include foreign-language films that have been submitted by their home country but haven’t had a chance to screen here first.

In contrast to music awards, which require an application form to be filed by the performing musician, documentaries and short films have separate eligibility standards and must be officially submitted by their creators.
