Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey in Liverpool, England, on July 7, 1940. He was an only child, and while his mother adored him, his father showed little interest in his upbringing. Starkey’s parents divorced when he was four years old, and he never saw much of his father after that. To support them, his mother worked as a maid and subsequently as a barmaid.
Ringo Starr rose to stardom as a member of the iconic rock group the Beatles in the early 1960s, and is noted for his easygoing demeanour. Starr was mostly a drummer for the band, but he also performed and penned songs for them, including “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “Octopus’s Garden.”

Starkey had an appendectomy at the age of six and subsequently developed peritonitis, forcing him to spend a year recovering at a local children’s hospital. The staff sought to distract and entertain their patients by having them form a band, and it was here that young Starkey first found percussion, striking the cabinets next to his bed with a wooden mallet. He was a drummer from then on, despite his musical skill on other instruments.
His mother remarried in 1953, and his new stepfather pushed him to pursue his passion for music. When he returned from the sanatorium in 1955, he was far behind in his studies and couldn’t go back to school. He attempted a number of other occupations, all of which were unfulfilling professionally, but one of his coworkers introduced him to skiffle music.
Skiffle was performed with household objects rather than musical instruments (which were often out of reach of struggling musicians), and Starkey began performing with a band on a regular basis. In 1957, he received his first real drum equipment for Christmas. A few years later, he joined Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, a real band with real instruments, and adopted the stage name Ringo Starr to represent both his rings and his enthusiasm in country and western music.
The band’s popularity soared, and on a tour in Hamburg, they first met the Beatles, a new group consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison.
