Ricky Gervais Wiki/Bio

Ricky grew up in Whitney, a Reading suburb, on a council estate. Although they were poor, his family was content. His mother, who was well-known for her wit, helped to instil a sense of humour in the family and they were always making fun of one other.

As a child, he was extremely self-reflective. A young sibling of his once inquired as to why he believed in God when he was just eight years old. After this and his mother’s reaction, he became an atheist, a conviction that he holds to this day.

He attended Whitney Infant School, then Whitney Junior School, for the first two years of his life. When he was ten or eleven, he exhibited significant interest in science and was given a microscope. By the time he was thirteen, his enthusiasm had grown considerably.

He attended Ashmead Comprehensive School, graduating in 1979, for his secondary schooling. After that, he worked as a gardener at Reading University for a brief time.

To pursue a degree in biology, he enrolled at University College, London, in 1980. However, he soon realised that he would have to spend forty hours a week in classes if he pursued biology, whereas he would have to spend far less time studying philosophy. He changed his major to philosophy in just a couple of weeks.

In 1983, Ricky Gervais earned an upper second-class honours degree in philosophy from University College London and then entered the University of London. However, he never went on to complete his education at that institution. in the University of London Union, he was hired as an assistant events manager (ULU). Gervais and his friend Bill Macrae established Seona Dancing in June 1982 while both were students at UCL. Gervais sang and Macrae played keyboards on a number of the tracks they co-wrote. It wasn’t long before they recorded a sixteen-song demo tape and were signed to London Records.

Two of their songs, “More to Lose” and “Bitter Heart,” were released on London Records in 1983. As a result, the band broke up in 1984, even though they had been widely publicised.

Up until his retirement in 1996, Gervais was a member of the University of London Union (ULU). His nightly show was hosted by him at a new radio station, called Xfm, which he joined in 1997 as the station’s chief of speech. At the same time, he began to make frequent appearances on Mary Ann Hobbs’ Radio 1 programme.

As of the end of 1997, Gervais realised that he needed one additional member of his staff. He was given Stephen Merchant’s CV by chance and invited him in for an interview, ultimately hiring him as his assistant.

Gervais and Merchant hosted a Saturday afternoon radio show from January 1998 through August 1998. They produced such features as “Hip Hop Hooray,” “Make Ricky Gervais Laugh,” and “Song for the Ladies” for it. However, with a broadcast window of four to six hours, it was unable to draw in a significant audience.

After Xfm’s takeover by the Capital Radio Group in August of that year, Gervais’ role became obsolete. Both guys eventually departed Xfm, and Merchant enrolled in a study in television production at the BBC. Gervais appeared in his student film, ‘Seedy Boss,’ which he filmed as part of his study.

They also worked together on a comedy pilot in 1998, which aired on Channel 4’s ‘Comedy Lab’ series in September of that year. Golden Years’ depicted the mid-life crises of an unnamed corporate boss. The pilot’s mission ended in failure.

In 2000, he appeared on BBC Two’s comic sketch show ‘Bruiser,’ where he provided sketches. A little later that year, he began appearing on a regular basis on the hugely popular “11 O’Clock Show” on Channel 4.

In the wake of his success in a show called ‘The 11 O’Clock Show,’ Ricky Gervais began hosting his own chat show on Channel 4. Two celebrities were featured in each programme that aired on Friday nights. It was only on from the 22nd of September to the 27th of October of the year 2000 that the show ran. Gervais and Merchant began work on ‘The Office,’ a mockumentary series, while they were both hosting ‘Meet Ricky Gervais.’ Inspired by Merchant’s 1998 coursework, “Seedy Boss,” the piece is a fictional incident that is presented as a documentary.

It was initially aired on BBC Two when it received poor ratings and was ready to be cancelled. In the following years, it became increasingly popular, running from July 9 to December 27 of that year and receiving various prizes. As a result, they decided to call it a night after concluding that things couldn’t get any worse.
