Richard Hammond Wiki/Bio

Richard Hammond is an English journalist best known for his role as a co-host on the hit television show Top Gear. People may not know that the Birmingham native has authored numerous books and produced an enormous number of popular science programs. Brainiac: Science Abuse and Invisible Worlds by Richard Hammond are two of the most well-known.

Richard Mark Hammond was born in Birmingham, England, on December 19, 1969. The grandson of a Birmingham autoworker grew up and went to school in Ripton, where his family of three moved in the mid-1980s with their three sons. Mother Eileen took care of the children while Alan Hammond, the father, found work at the notary’s office.

Richard attended Blossomfield Infant School, Ripon Grammar School, and Harrogate College of Art and Technology after graduating from Ripon Grammar School. Hammond studied photography and television technology in college before landing a job at a BBC radio station.

The young man began hosting the BBC Radio York morning show after working as an assistant. A courier and tea and coffee maker for more experienced colleagues filled the time in between classes. Soon, Richard grew tired of interviewing blacksmiths, farmers and chefs and moved on to look for more interesting stories to tell. Hammond began his television career in the late 1990s, appearing on Men & Motors’ daytime shows Car File and Motorweek. The young presenter became more comfortable on set and in front of the camera by talking about the cars and lifestyles of real men in each episode.

Richard joined Jeremy Clarkson and Jason Dawe on a new version of Top Gear in 2002. He took on a new job with gusto as a fan of technological progress and quickly established himself as an accomplished interviewer, stunt driver and stuntman. When Dawe was replaced by English journalist James May, the colleagues’ attitude toward Hammond shifted. Viewers will notice that Richard (who stands at 5.51 ft (168 cm) and weighs 143.3 lbs (65 kg)) appears comical when compared to the other tall and broad-shouldered men while watching the footage.

When the participants saw this effect, they started calling the shortest one Hamster, and that’s what they called him from then on. Clarkson and May made fun of their cardboard-eating, bleaching-teeth-brushing coworker on each show, and they made him take part in amazing car experiments as punishment. Richard had to test whether the car would run on cow manure and whether the stretch limo could jump over a wedding party for a period of 12 years. Hammond was struck by artificial lightning while driving a VW Golf V in one of the 2004 episodes. A road game of Russian Roulette followed, with him breaking the record for the most times a car rolled while moving at high speed.

Sadly, some of the experiments were not safe, and in 2006, while filming a Top Gear segment at the former RAF Elvington airbase near York, Richard was at risk of dying in an accident.

According to rumors, Hammond was driving a Vampire jet car at 464 km/h in an attempt to break the land vehicle speed record. As a result of the front-right tire blowing out, the car veered off the road and overturned before it could cash in. Richard’s eyes were damaged when he fell and hit his head. As a result, he was flown to a hospital in Leeds via helicopter ambulance. According to the results of the investigation, the presenter’s quick thinking and driving skills were the only things that kept him alive.

It took Hammond three months after the incident to make his first TV appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. He claimed to have spent two weeks unconscious and then suffered from post-traumatic amnesia and short-term memory loss following the ordeal.

Richard revealed to the Sunday Times that the ramifications of the Vampire crash episode were far worse than he had anticipated when he returned to his TV show in January 2007. He was depressed, had issues processing emotions, was forgetful, and couldn’t concentrate.

However, with the assistance of psychiatric professionals, the presenter was able to recover. He was a regular on Richard Hammond’s 5 O’Clock Show, Engineering Connections, and Richard Hammond’s Invisible Worlds, all documentaries about engineering and the environment. The Grand Tour is a show that Hammond and his former Top Gear co-hosts will be hosting after Clarkson has a falling out with the network’s management. Hammond and Clarkson previously co-hosted Top Gear until 2015. After launching the Amazon Prime Video-exclusive show, Hammond and his pals signed a three-year deal and the show aired once a week.

Richard narrowly escaped another accident while filming in Switzerland, where the presenters had set up an electric vehicle racing series. Instead of slowing down on a winding mountain road, he sped right through it, causing a Rimac Concept One to go off the road, flip over, and catch fire.

Fortunately for Hammond, he was able to escape with only a broken knee and a few scrapes. In 2018, the TV journalist returned to work after being taken to a local hospital, where doctors monitored the driver’s health condition. He shot in London with his wife supervising him in 2018 after being taken there by ambulance.
