Richard Blumenthal is a United States Senator representing Connecticut, serving his second term after being sworn in on January 5, 2011.
Senator Blumenthal was Connecticut’s Attorney General for an unprecedented five terms, battling for the people against large and powerful special interests. His strong enforcement of consumer protection, environmental stewardship, labour rights, and personal privacy laws has helped change the role of state attorneys general across the country, resulting in the annual recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars for Connecticut taxpayers and consumers.
He was a crucial figure in the national fight against Big Tobacco, and he was instrumental in ending deceptive marketing to children, a win that resulted in a major reduction in teenage smoking rates and a multibillion-dollar compensation for Connecticut taxpayers. He also assisted in the formation of a coalition of all 50 states that resulted in unprecedented agreements with social media platforms to better safeguard children from online predators.
He fought for reforms in the health insurance system as Attorney General to ensure crucial health care coverage and cut pharmaceutical prescription prices. He has worked tirelessly to rid the state government of corruption and make state procurement more accountable, fair, honest, and transparent.
His aggressive investigation and legal action against insurance industry practises has resulted in financial restitution and reform, increased consumer disclosure by insurers and brokers, and millions of dollars in compensation for the state, towns, and people. He has successfully opposed unjustified utility rate increases, acid rain caused by air pollution, general environmental misconduct, and a variety of consumer scams and frauds.
Senator Blumenthal has personally argued several key cases in court, including the Supreme Court’s successful upholding of Connecticut’s sex offender registry. He has sued the federal government for failing to observe or enforce environmental and energy regulations, as well as for placing multimillion-dollar unfunded obligations on local taxpayers under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Senator Blumenthal served as the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 1977 to 1981, prosecuting drug trafficking, organised and white collar crime, civil rights abuses, consumer fraud, and pollution. From 1984 to 1987, he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, and from 1987 to 1990, he was a member of the Connecticut State Senate. Senator Blumenthal saved the life of an innocent, mistakenly convicted death row inmate who was on the verge of execution as a volunteer attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Senator Blumenthal attended Harvard College (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude) and Yale Law School, where he was the Yale Law Journal’s Editor-in-Chief.
