In the 1970s and 1980s, Portland was hailed as Soccer City USA because of its prowess in the sport. In addition to Clyde Best, Stewart Scullion, and Peter Withe, the Timbers had coaches Vic Crowe and Don Megson. The North American Soccer League’s equivalent of the Super Bowl, the Soccer Bowl, was the first stop for the club in its inaugural season.

In 1968, the United Soccer Association and the National Professional Soccer League merged to form the NASL. Timbers were added to the league in 1975 when American fans began to embrace the sport that had been so successful in other countries.

Soccer was a huge hit in Portland right out of the gate. New York Cosmos, NASL’s most prominent team, were beaten by the Portland Timbers in the first season of the NASL, which attracted a large attendance. 16-6 was their regular-season winning percentage. The Portland Timbers beat Seattle and St. Louis in the playoffs before losing 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Rowdies in Soccer Bowl’75.

The Timbers enjoyed a great season in 1978, following two disappointing ones. Before falling to the Cosmos in the semifinals, they had a record of 20-10 in the regular season.

The Timbers made the playoffs one more, in 1981, losing 2-1 to San Diego in a best-of-three series. When attendance levels began to decline in 1982, the team was forced to close its doors for good.

A second-tier U.S. professional league, the United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL First Division), was established for Portland Timbers in 2001. When Merritt Paulson led a consortium that purchased the Timbers and the minor-league baseball franchise, the Portland Beavers, in 2007, interest in the club began to grow.

Major League Soccer gave the Portland Timbers an expansion franchise in 2009 as long as they built a soccer-only stadium. The $31 million renovations of PGE Park, now known as Jeld-Wen Field, were finished in early 2011. After a 3-1 loss to Colorado on March 19, 2011, the Portland Timbers sold all 12,500 season tickets for home games during the 2011 season.

On December 6, 2015, the Portland Timbers overcame the Columbus Crew 2-1 in the MLS Cup final in Columbus, Ohio, to win their first major league soccer trophy. Portland took the lead just 27 seconds into the game on a goal from Diego Valeri, who was named the game’s MVP. Darlington Nagbe then scored the game-winning goal.

Portland Timbers Biography/Wiki

For the first time in nearly four decades, Portland’s professional soccer team won a championship. This season, the Timbers had a rough middle but finished strong, defeating Sporting Kansas City, the Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as FC Dallas to claim their first title. Two days after that, 20,000 people gathered in downtown Portland for an event and procession.

The Portland Timbers are a member of MLS’s Western Conference and play in the league’s regular season. As an expansion team in 2011, the Portland Timbers began playing home games at Providence Park.

M.L.S.C. was established after Portland, Oregon was awarded an expansion franchise in 2009. It was Merritt Paulson’s enterprises, who had acquired the then-USL Pro team in 2007 and founded the Portland Thorns women’s team in 2012, that acquired Peregrine Sports, the team’s principal owner. Founded in 1975, the club is the fourth Portland-based soccer franchise to bear the Timbers moniker, following the previous team’s departure from the North American Soccer League.

Due to an imbalance between player compensation and team revenue, the team disbanded at the conclusion of its 1982 season. The Timbers were the first team to bring soccer to the greater Portland area. The Timbers’ current fan base and the tens of thousands of people that play and follow the game are living testaments to their legacy. After their playing days were over, several of these Timbers stayed in the area and worked to make soccer a popular local pastime.
