NFL team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Eagles have three NFL titles (1948, 1949, and 1960) and one Super Bowl victory under their belts (the 1960 title) (2018).

In 1933, a group of Philadelphia investors purchased the charred remains of the defunct Frankford Yellow Jackets club and became the Eagles. As a result, they only had one or two victories in seven of their first ten seasons. But when Earle (“Greasy”) Neale was hired as the team’s head coach in 1941, things began to look up for the Phillies. Steve Van Buren, the team’s great running back, led Neale’s squads to the NFL championship game in 1947 and to the league’s championships in 1948 and 1949.

After winning consecutive championships, the Eagles began to slip, and by the mid-1950s, they were finishing in the bottom half of the league on a regular basis. Norm Van Brocklin and the small Tommy McDonald led the offence, while Chuck Bednarik led the defence, as the Eagles won their third NFL championship by a score of 17-13 over the Green Bay Packers in 1960.

Eagles’ comeback was short-lived, as the team went on an 18-year playoff drought after winning the Super Bowl in 2011. During his first season in charge, head coach Dick Vermeil had the Eagles (and their supporters) fired up, leading to four straight postseason appearances from 1978 to 1981 with teams led by quarterback Ron Jaworski and towering wide receiver Harold Carmichael (who stood at 6’8″ [2.03 metres]).

In 1981, the Eagles made their first trip to the Super Bowl, where they fell to the Oakland Raiders by a score of 27–10. This team added two key players before their 1985 season: Randall Cunningham, a quick-footed quarterback who established a career-high for rush yards from the quarterback position, and Reggie White, a dominant defensive end who ended his career as NFL all-time sack leader. The Eagles won just one playoff game in which the duo played between 1988 and 1992, despite their outstanding individual performances.

The franchise appointed Andy Reid as head coach in 1999, and he selected quarterback Donovan McNabb with the first overall pick in the draught. They helped lead the Eagles to eight playoff appearances in ten years starting in their second season in Philly, including five trips to the NFC championship game and one to the Super Bowl in 2005, but no titles. They had a turbulent relationship both on and off the field, with McNabb eventually being transferred away in 2010. After a year as the Eagles’ backup quarterback, Michael Vick helped the young club capture the division title.

The following off-season, the Eagles signed a slew of high-profile free agents, including cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, raising championship hopes. Philadelphia, on the other hand, battled to an 8–8 record and failed to make the postseason as a result in 2011. Reid was fired at the end of the season after the squad had an injury-plagued 4–12 campaign in 2012. Despite winning 10 games and winning the division title in 2013, the Eagles fell short of the playoffs after a humbling first-round loss. In 2014, the Eagles finished with a winning record but missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Doug Pederson was named as head coach of the Eagles in 2016 and has led the team ever since. As a former Reid assistant coach, Pederson rolled up a game-changing scheme in 2017 that was a huge success thanks to the play of rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. They won their division and went to the Super Bowl even though Wentz had a career-ending injury in Week 13, but they still won. To win the franchise’s first Super Bowl, the Eagles relied on backup quarterback Nick Foles to defeat the New England Patriots.

Early in the 2018 season, the team struggled, but an injury to Carson Wentz opened the door for Nick Foles to lead the team to three straight regular-season victories and sneak into the playoffs, where the Eagles won their first game before being defeated in the division round. While Wentz remained injury-free in 2019, the rest of the Eagles’ squad was ravaged by the year’s calamities. Despite the fact that they won nine games in a row to claim the division title, the Flyers were upset in the first round of the playoffs.
