Pete Townshend Wiki/Bio

Pete Townshend, a Grammy Award-winning English rock musician, was a pivotal role in the genre of rock music in the 1960s and 1970s. He captivated his fans with his characteristic windmill swings and smashing guitar techniques as a great songwriter and energetic performer. Pete Townshend was the most prominent songwriter and guitarist of the English rock band ‘The Who’ during his active years and is still revered for his concept works and out-of-the-box conceptions.

He later pursued a solo career and released numerous tribute albums to his spiritual teacher, Meher Baba. In a musical career spanning more than four decades, he has written over 100 songs for the band ‘The Who,’ including the Grammy Award-winning opera album, ‘Tommy’ (which premiered on Broadway), concept albums and other rock operas, and the timeless classic, ‘Quadrophenia.’ Among his best-known albums are ‘Empty Glass,’ ‘White City: A Novel,’ and ‘Psychoderelict.’

He was named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” by Rolling Stone magazine. In addition, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend was born on May 19, 1945, in Chiswick, London, England, to a musical family. Cliff Townshend, his father, was a saxophone, and Betty Townshend, his mother, was a singer.

As a child, he was fascinated to music, particularly American rock & roll, which he discovered in the mid 1950s. His grandma gave him his first guitar when he was twelve years old.

He began attending Ealing Art College in London, England, in 1961, where he studied to become a graphic artist. The next year, he co-founded the band ‘The Confederates’ with a school mate, John Entwistle.

Later, he and John Entwistle formed the English rock band ‘The Detours,’ which was renamed ‘The Who’ in 1964. He was the band’s guitarist. Since 1964, he has written a number of popular singles for the band. Among the singles are ‘I Can’t Explain,’ ‘Pictures of Lily,’ ‘Substitute,’ and ‘My Generation.’

The band’s debut album, named ‘My Generation,’ was released on December 3, 1965. As a member of ‘The Who,’ he composed and wrote the majority of the songs. The album was well welcomed by critics.

‘The Who’ released their second album, ‘A Quick One,’ in 1966, which included the enormous smash song, ‘Happy Jack.’ The band’s third album, ‘The Who Sell Out,’ was released the following year.

‘The Who’ issued their next album, ‘Tommy,’ in 1969, which was mostly composed by him. He gained a lot of accolades and critical acclaim for his efforts on the record.

In 1970, he released the album ‘Happy Birthday,’ co-written with Ronnie Lane. This CD was a tribute and dedication to his spiritual leader, Meher Baba.

In 1971, ‘The Who’ released the album named ‘Who’s Next,’ which included elements of rock opera, an idea developed by him. The album received both critical acclaim and economic success.

In 1972, he released the collaboration album ‘I Am,’ which was a tribute to Meher Baba. The next year, he released the album ‘Who Came First?’

‘The Who’ released their second rock opera album, ‘Quadrophenia,’ in 1973, and it was a commercial success. It also earned good feedback from music critics all over the world.

‘The Who’ released their album titled ‘The Who by Numbers’ in 1975, which reached the top of the music charts. The next year, he released ‘With Love,’ an album devoted to his mentor, Meher Baba.

In 1977, he recorded an album called ‘Rough Mix’ with bassist Ronnie Lane. ‘My Baby Gives It Away,’ ‘Keep Me Turning,’ ‘Misunderstood,’ ‘Street in the City,’ and ‘Heart to Hang Onto’ are among the songs he wrote.

‘The Who’ released their chart-topping album named ‘Who Are You’ in 1978, which was their final record with drummer Keith Moon, who died just a few days after the album’s release.

In 1980, he released his solo album, ‘Empty Glass,’ which became one of his most successful records. The following year, ‘The Who’ released the album ‘Face Dances,’ for which he penned the majority of the songs.

‘All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes,’ his solo album, was released in 1982. The same year, ‘The Who’ released the album ‘It’s Hard,’ which was later reissued.

He released his solo concept album, ‘White City: A Novel,’ in 1985. The following year, he released ‘Deep End Live!,’ a live CD that included fragments from live concerts at London’s Brixton Academy.

In 1989, he released ‘The Iron Man: The Musical by Pete Townshend,’ which he composed and performed for the most part. His singles ‘A Friend Is A Friend’ and ‘I Won’t Run Anymore’ were released the same year.

In 1993, he published the concept album ‘Psychoderelict,’ which he also produced and engineered. The following year, he released the compilation album ‘Scoop3’.

The rock musical ‘The Who’s Tommy,’ based on ‘The Who’s’ rock opera album ‘Tommy,’ premiered on Broadway in 1993. This was also published as a book.

He recorded a series of live CDs in 2000, named ‘Live: Sadler’s Wells,’ ‘Live: The Empire,’ and ‘Live: The Fillmore.’ The next year, he released the albums ‘Jai Baba’ and ‘O’ Parvardigar.’

‘The Who’ published the album ‘Endless Wire’ in 2006, as well as the live event album ‘Live from Toronto’. That same year, the band released the extended play ‘Wire & Glass.’

A documentary based on ‘The Who,’ named ‘Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who,’ was broadcast on television in 2007. The following year, they were also the focus of a special tribute performance, titled ‘VH1 Rock Honors: The Who,’ which aired on VH1.

‘The Who’ performed during the half-time show of Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. The band issued a compilation CD named ‘Greatest Hits’ the same year.

Career

The Who’s song ‘My Generation’ was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was included on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.”

His solo album, ‘Empty Glass,’ was named 57 on the list of the ‘100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s’ by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine.  He was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In 2010, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of West London.

From 1964 to 1982, Pete Townshend was the guitarist and key composer for the Who, besides taking part in the group’s occasional reunions after its formal separation. He wrote Tommy and Quadrophenia for the band, as well as the majority of its other material, and is best known for his conceptual works. In 1972, he released his first tentative solo album, Who Came First. It was dedicated to his teacher, Meher Baba, and continued themes explored in Who’s Next, as well as material initially planned for an unrealized conceptual work, Lifehouse; it sold little. In 1976, he released Rough Mix, a duo album with Ronnie Lane, formerly of the Small Faces.

Empty Glass (1980) was Townshend’s first full-fledged solo effort, selling a million copies, reaching the Top Five, and featuring the Top Ten hit “Let My Love Open the Door,” as well as minor successes “A Little Is Enough” and “Rough Boys.” He followed it up in 1982 with the less successful All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. In 1983, Townshend released Scoop, a two-disc demo compilation (a second volume appeared in 1987).

With the album White City: A Novel, which included the Top 30 single “Face the Face,” he returned to thematic attempts in 1985. The same year, he released Horse’s Neck, a collection of short stories. He appeared in an accompanying film as part of the White City project, for which he formed Pete Townshend’s Deep End. The band only played a few shows, but one of them was videotaped and recorded, which resulted in the 1986 album Pete Townshend’s Deep End Live! In 1989, he released The Iron Man, an album based on poet Ted Hughes’ children’s storey. The album included guest vocals from John Lee Hooker and Nina Simone, as well as two tracks featuring the Who’s three surviving members. Concurrent with the release of the album, Townshend embarked on a reunion tour with the Who, an event that overshadowed The Iron Man, which sold poorly.

Townshend released another conceptual work, Psychoderelict, in 1993, to mixed reviews and dismal sales. By that point, however, he had successfully reinvented himself as a Broadway songsmith, with The Who’s Tommy being a huge hit, garnering him a Tony Award and motivating him to explore more stage musicals.

Following the group’s 1996 reunion to perform Quadrophenia at Hyde Park, The Who became a regular concern. Endless Wire, the band’s first album in 24 years and Townshend’s first collection of new songs in 13 years, was released in 2006 by Townshend and Roger Daltrey as the Who.

The group continued to perform regularly throughout the next few years, culminating in a 50th anniversary tour in 2015. The next summer, Townshend released Classic Quadrophenia, the lead album in a symphonic reimagining of his 1973 rock opera. Classic Quadrophenia featured Townshend, Billy Idol, Alfie Boe, and Phil Daniels, as well as orchestrations by Townshend’s partner, Rachel Fuller.
