Paul Wight Wiki/Bio

Paul Donald Wight II, better known by his ring as Big Show, is an American actor and professional wrestler who is presently signed to World Wrestling Entertainment’s RAW brand (WWE). He was working odd jobs in South Carolina when he met Danny Bonaduce, who eventually connected him to Hulk Hogan. Hogan was so taken aback by Wight’s in-ring presence that he mentioned him to several of his colleagues, including World Championship Wrestling Vice President Eric Bischoff. He made his professional wrestling debut in 1995 in WCW as The Giant. He became a member of the New World Order (nWo) stable during his stint in the promotion, which effectively controlled the WCW material in the late 1990s. Wight left WCW in February 1999 for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he assumed the ring moniker ‘Big Show.’ Big Show would go on to become one of the most successful and influential professional wrestlers in the history of sports entertainment in the years that followed. He was twice the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, twice the WWF/WWE World Heavyweight Champion, twice the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and once the ECW World Heavyweight Champion. Wight made his acting debut in 1996 with ‘Reggie’s Prayer’ and has since starred in a number of additional films, including ‘The Waterboy,’ ‘MacGruber,’ and ‘Countdown.’

Paul Wight was born on February 8, 1972, in Aiken, South Carolina, the county seat and main city of Aiken County.
Wight, like his idol André the Giant, was afflicted with acromegaly, a condition in which the pituitary gland releases an abnormal amount of growth hormone. He was already 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) tall at the age of 12, weighed 220 lb (100 kg), and sported chest hair. Wight was registered as 7 ft 1 in when he turned 19 and joined the Wichita State University basketball team (2.16 m).

As a child, Wight was a very promising athlete. He was a member of his high school’s basketball and American football teams in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.

On the football field, he was a tight end, while on the basketball floor, he was a superb centre. He did, however, decide to stop playing football following a disagreement with the coach. In his sophomore year, he continued to support the team by joining the cheerleading squad.

Wight briefly attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, after graduating from high school, where he was a member of the basketball team. He enrolled at Wichita State University after leaving Northern Oklahoma. Wight was also a member of their basketball squad.

Career

Between 1992 and 1993, he attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he was a member of the NCAA Division II Cougars basketball team and the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity’s Xi Beta Chapter.

After completing his studies, Wight worked in a variety of odd occupations, including bouncing and bounty hunting. Additionally, he was fielding phone calls for a karaoke firm. He and Danny Bonaduce met during this time period during a live microphone amateur contest on his morning radio show. Wight met Hulk Hogan through Bonaduce.

Hogan recognised Wight’s potential after witnessing him excite the audience during a promotional basketball game for WCW and later spoke with Eric Bischoff about him. Wight previously applied to join the WWF but was denied due to his lack of training.

He then approached Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory for instruction and paid them $5,000. Sharpe, on the other hand, was afflicted with gout at the time, and Wight ended up training with Johnny Polo.

Wight made his professional wrestling debut for the World Wrestling Association on December 3, 1994, in Clementon, New Jersey, losing to WWA Heavyweight Champion Frank Finnegan. His debut encounter in the WWA also proved to be his final outing for the organisation. Following this, he received a lucrative contract with WCW in 1995.

He was first branded as André the Giant’s son during his stay with WCW, but that was immediately dropped. He debuted as The Giant and faced WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hogan in his first match for the organisation at the 1995 Halloween Havoc. He went on to win the match and, as a result, the championship belt, which he retained for a few days before being stripped of it.

After several weeks of feuding with nWo members, he joined the stable in 1996 and remained until December. During this time period, he won the World War 3 battle royal and attempted to challenge Hogan for the World Heavyweight title. He was refused and expelled from the nWo. Following that, he had a notable feud with Kevin Nash.

By 1999, Wight had lost faith in his WCW prospects. He had become aware that he was earning substantially less than the organization’s top wrestlers and allowed his contract with the promotion to lapse. On his 27th birthday, February 8, 1999, he became a free agent.

Wight signed a ten-year contract with the WWF on February 9, 1999, and later assumed the ring moniker ‘Big Show’. He began his career as a member of Vince McMahon’s stable, The Corporation, and made his professional wrestling debut at the 1999 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre: In Your House.

He feuded with The Rock, Kane, The Undertaker, and McMahon himself in the months that followed, and temporarily formed an alliance with The Undertaker. Big Show won the WWF Championship for the first time at the 1999 Survivor Series, defeating The Rock and Triple H.

The belt was held by Big Show until January 3, 2000, when he was defeated by Triple H. He continued his feud with Triple H and The Rock in the months that followed and was a featured performer at WrestleMania 2000. Following that, he developed a comedy gimmick in which he imitated other professional wrestlers.

He was temporarily associated with a stable known as ‘The Conspiracy.’ He was then assigned to the World Wrestling Federation’s developmental area Ohio Valley Wrestling in order to shed weight and improve his cardiovascular condition.

He returned at the 2001 Royal Rumble and played a pivotal role in the storyline The Invasion. Big Show defeated Brock Lesnar at the 2002 Survivor Series to win the WWE Championship for the second time. He lost the belt against Kurt Angle a month later.

He defeated Eddie Guerrero to win the United States Championship at the 2003 No Mercy. He was defeated at WrestleMania 21 by Japanese sumo legend Akebono in a worked sumo match.

He began working with Kane in October 2005. They initially teamed up and won the World Tag Team Championship, but then became embroiled in a dispute that resulted in two no-contest matches.

On July 4, 2006, as part of WWE’s new ECW brand, he won the ECW World Heavyweight Championship. His time with the brand, however, was tarnished by multiple major injuries. He needed time to recuperate. His contract with WWE was later terminated.

He returned to WWE in 2011 after appearing in one match for Memphis Wrestling. He won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time at the 2011 TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs event. He would recapture it at the 2012 Hell in the Cell after losing it to Daniel Bryan that very day. He has since been a part of the majority of WWE’s big storylines, including The Authority plot.

After leaving professional wrestling in September 2017 to undergo surgery, he returned on April 4, 2018 to induct long-time buddy Mark Henry into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Wight played Brick Hughes in the 2010 action comedy ‘MacGruber,’ which was based on a ‘Saturday Night Live’ segment parodying the 1985 sitcom ‘MacGyver.’

Wight starred as Walter Krunk in the lowbrow comedy ‘Knucklehead’. He recently starred opposite Dean Cain in ‘Vendetta’ (2015) and as himself in ‘Countdown’ (2016). In ‘The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!,’ he also voiced a character based on his professional wrestling persona.

Wight has appeared as a guest star on various television episodes over his career, including ‘Shasta McNasty’ (1999), ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ (2004), and ‘Psych’ (2013).
