Patrick Soon-Shiong Wiki/Bio
Patrick Soon-Shiong (born July 29, 1952) is a South African-born American transplant surgeon, business magnate, bioscientist, and media mogul. He developed the medication Abraxane, which gained widespread recognition for its efficacy against lung, breast, and pancreatic cancer. Soon-Shiong founded NantWorks, a network of healthcare, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence startups; he is also an adjunct professor of surgery and executive director of the University of California, Los Angeles’ Wireless Health Institute, as well as a visiting professor at Imperial College London and Dartmouth College. Soon-Shiong has authored over 100 scientific articles and been granted over 230 patents globally for breakthroughs in a variety of disciplines of technology and medicine.
Soon-Shiong is the chairman of three non-profit organisations: the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, which seeks to fund research and eliminate disparities in access to health care and education; the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health, which is dedicated to transforming the way health information is shared; and the Healthcare Transformation Institute, a collaboration with the University of Arizona. Since 2010, he has been a minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has been the owner and executive chairman of the Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union-Tribune since June 2018. Soon-net Shiong’s worth is estimated by Forbes to be US$11.5 billion as of April 2021. He has taken the Giving Pledge, pledging to donate at least half of his money to charity.
Soon-Shiong was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to Chinese immigrants who escaped China during World War II. His parents were Hakka from Guangdong province’s Mei County. Huang () is his ancestor’s surname.
Soon-Shiong graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in fourth place out of 189 students, earning a bachelor’s degree in medicine (MBBCh) at the age of 23.
He finished an internship in medicine at the Johannesburg General Hospital. He subsequently attended the University of British Columbia, where he obtained a master’s degree in 1979 and was recognised for his research by the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Association of Academic Surgery.
He immigrated to the United States and began his surgical study at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1984, he earned his board certification as a surgeon.Soon-Shiong is a Fellow of both the Canadian Royal College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
Soon-Shiong joined the faculty of UCLA Medical School in 1983 and served as a transplant surgeon there until 1991. He worked as an associate investigator at the Center for Ulcer Research and Education from 1984 to 1987. Soon-Shiong performed the first whole-pancreas transplant at UCLA, and he pioneered the experimental Type 1 diabetes treatment known as encapsulated human islet transplantation, as well as the “first pig-to-man islet-cell transplantation in diabetic patients.” He returned to UCLA in 2009 after a spell in industry, where he served as a professor of microbiology, immunology, molecular genetics, and bioengineering until this date. Soon-Shiong visited Imperial College, London, in 2011 as a visiting professor.
In 1998, Soon-Shiong acquired Fujisawa, a distributor of injectable generic pharmaceuticals. He utilised the profits to develop Abraxane, which wrapped an existing chemotherapy drug, Taxol, in protein to make it more easily delivered to tumours. He was able to expedite the approval process and profit from this drug. Soon-Shiong left UCLA in 1991 to create VivoRx Inc., a diabetic and cancer biotechnology company. This resulted in the formation of APP Pharmaceuticals in 1997, which he owned 80 percent of the outstanding stock and sold to Fresenius SE in July 2008 for $4.6 billion. Soon-Shiong later developed Abraxis BioScience (producer of the medication Abraxane), which he sold to Celgene in 2010 for more than $3 billion in cash and stock.
NantHealth was formed in 2007 by Soon-Shiong to provide fiber-optic, cloud-based data infrastructure for the exchange of healthcare information. Soon-Shiong founded NantWorks in September 2011 with the objective of “converging ultra-low power semiconductor technology, supercomputing, high performance, secure advanced networks, and augmented intelligence to alter how we work, play, and live.” Soon-Shiong revealed in October 2012 that NantHealth’s supercomputer-based system and network were capable of analysing and transmitting genetic data from a tumour sample in 47 seconds. The purpose of building this infrastructure and digital technologies was to facilitate the exchange of genetic data between sequencing centres,
medical research hubs, and hospitals, as well as to promote cancer research and large-scale scientific projects such as The Cancer Genome Atlas. He created another biotechnology business, NantOmics, in January 2013 to research cancer treatments based on protein kinase inhibitors. NantWorks was the parent business of NantOmics and its sister company, NantHealth. Soon-Shiong stated that NantWorks’ vision for the future of cancer treatment was the convergence of multiple technologies, including diagnostics, supercomputing, network modelling of data sharing on tumour genes, and personalised cancer drug cocktails in multi-target attacks, in order to achieve a sustained disease-free state.
