Pat McAfee was born on May 2, 1987, in Plum, Pennsylvania, to Tim and Sally McAfee. He played soccer, volleyball, and football at Plum High School and gained college attention in all three sports. He borrowed $100 from a friend as a senior and turned it into $1,400 by playing poker at an illegal bar. He used the money to go to Miami for the final day of a national competition showcasing the best field goal kicking prospects in the country. McAfee kicked nine field goals in a row, starting at 25 yards and advancing five yards each time. He just missed a 70-yard field goal, missing to the right but still having enough distance to make it. Tony Gibson, West Virginia’s recruitment agent, met him in the school lunchroom when he returned home and offered him a scholarship.
As a rookie, McAfee secured the starting job at West Virginia. As a freshman, he went 11-for-18 on field goals and had 70 kickoffs with 20 touchbacks. McAfee’s most memorable game was a 46–44 triple overtime victory over Louisville, which came after a strong McAfee onside kick. Running back Steve Slaton had a chance to tie the game with a one-yard touchdown run after the onside kick.
Despite losses to Louisville and USF, the Mountaineers won ten games and defeated Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl. McAfee’s junior season began with a missed extra point against Western Michigan, snapping his 106-game run of extra points. He ended the season with a 2-for-4 record in the Fiesta Bowl, with one kick being stopped by Oklahoma. Following the bowl season, he was selected to the ESPN All-Bowl Team.
In WVU’s 13–9 defeat to a Pitt Panthers team with just four wins, McAfee missed two relatively short field goals, knocking the Mountaineers out of the BCS National Championship Game. He was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award for best college kicker in 2007. In 2007, McAfee was named second-team All-Big East and three times earned Big East Special Team Player of the Week honors. For the second year in a row, he received the Scott Shirley Award from West Virginia.
McAfee kicked two field goals, including a career-long of 52 yards, six extra points, and two punts in a 48–21 win over Villanova to start his senior year. With a field goal in the subsequent 27–3 victory over Marshall, McAfee passed Slaton as the school’s all-time leading scorer. In a 34–17 win over Auburn, he went two for two on-field goals, moving into third place in the Big East for career field goals made.
On November 8, the Mountaineers were down 13 points with 1:11 left in regulation against Cincinnati but scored a safety, touchdown, and two-point conversion in less than a minute to cut the deficit to three points. With 18 seconds left, McAfee’s onside kick was recovered. He then tied the game with a 52-yard field goal as time expired, but the Mountaineers lost in overtime.
McAfee had a career-high 44.7 yards per punt average, a Big East-leading 23 punts inside the 20-yard line, and a career-high 2,639 yards with a 65-yard long punt. He was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, but was defeated by Matt Fodge.
McAfee announced his retirement from the NFL on February 2, 2017, after eight seasons, and confirmed his intention to join Barstool Sports as a contributor. He cited his latest knee surgery (his third in four seasons), as well as his strained relationship with Colts general manager Ryan Grigson, as factors in his decision.
