PACCAR Inc., the world’s second largest producer of medium and heavy trucks, sells Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, Foden, Leyland, and DAF brand names. PACCAR also manufactured and distributed industrial winches, managed finance and leasing businesses, and marketed automobile parts and accessories through its A1’s Auto and Grand Auto retail locations in the late 1990s.
PACCAR’s history began in 1904 with the establishment of a steel foundry in Bellevue, Washington (near Seattle). At the time, Seattle’s key businesses were forestry and shipping, neither of which required primary steel products. In the absence of a market for the steel, William Pigott, the company’s founder, opted to create a second plant to make finished steel goods. The company began manufacturing “bunks” in 1905, the steel clasps used to tie logs to railroad flat trains. Soon after, the company began manufacturing railroad cars and changed its name to Pacific Car & Foundry Company.
Pacific Car & Foundry produced a range of specialised transportation equipment throughout the next two decades, but remained principally active in railroad car construction. Pacific Car was formed in April 1924 and was acquired by the American Car & Foundry Company four years later. Pacific Car bought the Arrow Pump Company and the Bacon & Matheson Drop Forge Company in May 1931.
American Car & Foundry was forced to close its Pacific Car plant in Renton, south of Seattle, due to severe economic difficulties during the Great Depression. Paul Pigott, the son of William Pigott, repurchased the factory in 1934 and began manufacturing of chilled box cars. Railroads and agricultural combines purchased the box carriages, or “reefers,” to carry perishable produce to distant markets. Despite persistently weak economic conditions, production of the business’s refrigeration vehicles was extraordinarily successful, generating enough extra money to enable the business to acquire Heisers Incorporated, a maker of motor buses, in 1936.
Pacific Car manufactured railcars for the transfer of military materiel from manufacturing factories to major ports during World War II. Additionally, the company produced specialised vehicles and mechanical components. Following a reorganisation in 1943, the firm retired its common stock and issued new preferred shares to compensate owners. Pacific Car was reorganised under close family control following the reorganisation.
Pacific Car & Foundry acquired the Seattle-based Kenworth Motor Truck Corporation in January 1945, as the war neared its conclusion. Kenworth became known for its quality diesel trucks after specialising in the construction of powerful diesel trucks.
Transportation requirements increased significantly in the western United States throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. Despite the rise of smaller communities in the West, train companies could not afford to build new lines. This increased demand for huge vehicles capable of ascending severe mountain grades and traversing lengthy areas of flatland. Kenworth trucks were ideal for this type of job and, while they were pricey, they were also extremely reliable and popular.
Pacific Car & Foundry acquired the Commercial Ship Repair Company’s Seattle facilities in 1953. Five years later, Pacific Car acquired the Dart Truck Company, a Kansas City-based manufacturer of large “off-highway” construction equipment such as earth movers and giant dump trucks; and the following year, 1954, Pacific Car acquired the Peterbilt Motors Company, a truck manufacturer similar to Kenworth based in Newark, California.
When Paul Pigott died in 1961, the business elected Robert O’Brien to succeed him as president. O’Brien prioritised truck sales and structural steel manufacturing. Between 1961 and 1966, Pacific Car’s earnings increased by an average of 23% each year as a result of these initiatives. In 1965, Robert O’Brien was appointed to chairman of the board and Charles Pigott, the founder’s grandson, was named president.
Pacific Car acquired Gearmatic, a Canadian maker of automotive transmissions and industrial winches, in early 1967, and Sicard Incorporated, a manufacturer of snow removal equipment and airport vehicles, in early 1967.
From April 5 through July 22, 1968, workers at all three Pacific Car facilities in Seattle waged a severe labour strike. This sparked a 12-week strike at Gearmatic’s British Columbia operation and a three-week strike at Dart’s Kansas City operation. Pacific Car lost almost $1 million in production as a result of the strikes, although the vehicle divisions suffered little lasting damage.
