Byrne had four foreign languages under his belt, including Mandarin, and had gained black belts in hapkido and tae kwon do as well as cycling across the United States three times. Between 1985 and 1988, he battled cancer successfully, surviving three occurrences of seminoma and 20 surgeries, an odyssey that left the six-foot-five-inch, 240-pound Byrne weighing only 164 pounds. He also had a strong memory, which he showed using a deck of cards. After a few minutes of studying the cards, he was able to recall their sequence in either way, one by one. Six months after completing the feat, Byrne was able to recall the exact arrangement of the deck.
In the months leading up to his involvement with D2-Discounts Direct, Byrne split his time between running an investing firm and assisting Buffett. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway owned a slew of businesses, including Fechheimer Brothers, a Cincinnati-based uniform manufacturer. In 1998, when the company was having trouble, Buffett asked Byrne to take over as interim CEO. According to sources in the February 7, 2000 issue of Fortune, Byrne led Fechheimer Brothers for 18 months, attracting supporters who characterised him as “the best motivator ever” and opponents who accused him of being “too quick on the trigger.”
Byrne kept himself busy professionally by running High Plains Investments, a personal investment firm that D2-Discounts Direct’s founder approached for funding. Byrne had created a $100 million portfolio through High Plains, giving him more than enough funds to invest in D 2-Discounts Direct.
