Lucas, a well-known private venture capitalist, about becoming chairman of the board.
Ellison continued to watch technical documents issued by IBM while working on the CIA project, a practise he adopted when working as a programmer at Amdahl. Ellison saw that the computer behemoth was intrigued by new forms of fast, efficient, and versatile database applications called relational databases, which were expected to one day enable computer users to retrieve business data in virtually any format. What was intended to enable this was IBM’s Structured Query Language (SQL), a computer language that would instruct a relational database on what to fetch and how to display it.
Ellison and Miner set out to create a similar software for Digital minicomputers and other types of machines, based on what ultimately proved to be a right hunch—that IBM would include the new relational database and SQL into future systems. Miner created the Oracle RDBMS (relational database management system) in 1978, the world’s first relational database using SQL, which enabled enterprises to use a variety of various-sized machines from a variety of different manufacturers while maintaining software standardisation. Oracle became the first business to commercially sell a relational database management system a year after its pioneering development, two years before IBM launched its own RDBMS system.
