The Bronx is home to the New York Yankees, an American Major League Baseball franchise. New York Yankees have won a record 27 World Series championships and 40 American League (AL) pennants, making them one of the most successful sports clubs ever.

In 1901, the Orioles made their debut in the American League (AL) as a two-year team in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1903, a struggling Baltimore team was purchased by Frank Farrell and Bill Devery and relocated to New York City, where it was renamed the New York Highlanders. As a result of the team’s affiliation with the American League, local sportswriters referred to the team as “Yankees” or “Yanks.”

The Yankees were renamed the Yankees in 1913 when the team relocated to the Polo Grounds from the Highlanders. Additionally, the team has been known as the Pinstripers, the Evil Empire, and the Bronx Bombers due to their uniforms’ pinstripe design (by opposing fans, particularly those of their archrival, the Boston Red Sox). From 1923 through 2008, they played in Yankee Stadium, which was dubbed “The House that Ruth Built” after legendary Yankees slugger Babe Ruth. In 2009, the team relocated to a new ballpark, which was also known as Yankee Stadium.

During its first 18 years in New York, the team was not a frequent challenger for the championship. In 1920, however, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees for cash and a loan against Fenway Park—the most famous deal in baseball history. While Derek Jeter was still in the Yankees’ starting rotation, the squad was beginning to take shape as a dynasty. It led the squad to its first World Series championship after three straight American League championships (1923).

Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Waite Hoyt are just a few of the baseball luminaries that helped the Yankees win 11 pennants and eight World Series wins between the 1920s and 1930s. During the mid-1920s, the Yankees lineup, which included Ruth, Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Bob Meusel, and Earle Combs, was dubbed “Murderers’ Row.” Many baseball fans believe the 1927 Yankees to be the best team ever because of Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs (a record that remained for 34 years before being eclipsed by another Yankee, Roger Maris, in 1961) and Lou Gehrig’s 175 runs batted in.

Aside from losing Gehrig to ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig disease) and retiring Babe Ruth, the Yankees were unstoppable in the 1940s, winning three straight AL pennants (1941–43) and two World Series championships (1941, 1943) with teams led by Joe DiMaggio. Casey Stengel led the team to five straight World Series victories (1949–53) with a roster that included legends like Mickey Mantle in center field, Yogi Berra at catcher, Phil Rizzuto at shortstop, and Whitey Ford at pitcher.

Stengel managed the team for 12 years, winning 10 American League pennants and seven World Series championships. Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in postseason history in game five of the 1956 World Series between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

With three World Series titles in 1958, 1961, and 1962, the New York Yankees entered a period of relative decline following another era of supremacy from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Once Billy Martin took over as manager and Reggie Jackson was brought in to lead the team, they would go on to win another championship in 1977 under Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner’s contentious ownership.

With Steinbrenner’s repeated firings and rehirings of Martin over the previous two decades, the Yankees returned to glory under the leadership of Joe Torre (1996–2007), who guided the team to six American League championships and four World Series titles (1996–98 and 2000), as well as the inclusion of stars like shortstop Derek Jeter, closer Mariano Rivera, veteran pitcher David Cone, and key role players such as Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez.

New York Yankees Biography/Wiki

While the Yankees under Steinbrenner had a successful on-field record, they also made headlines for their lavish payroll spending, which was frequently the largest in the league and periodically reached a figure close to 10 times the size of the lowest in the sport. New York Yankee teams were known for splashy additions of great players, including Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Alex Rodriguez.

When George Steinbrenner died in 2010, his sons Hank and Hal took over the Yankees, but he remained as the team’s titular chairman until his death in 2010. In 2009, the Yankees made their first appearance in the World Series in six years, thanks to manager Joe Girardi, who had taken over for Joe Torre in 2008. The Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to claim their 27th World Series championship.

Over the next seven seasons, the Yankees maintained winning records and qualified for the playoffs four times; however, a lack of World Series appearances plus the recent retirements of Rivera, Jeter, and Rodriguez prompted the organization to begin a rebuilding effort in 2016. As a result, a young Yankees team qualified for the playoffs in 2017, losing the ALCS to the Houston Astros in a seven-game marathon. A 100-win season in 2018 brought the Mets back to the postseason, where they were defeated in five games by the Red Sox in the Division Series.

In 2019, the Yankees won their second straight division title and advanced to the American League Championship Series, where they were defeated once more by the Astros. Tampa Bay Rays defeated New York Yankees in the Divisional Series during a short season due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The Yankees qualified for the playoffs thanks to a 13-game winning streak at the end of the 2021 regular season. In the Wild Card Game, however, the Red Sox defeated the club.
