Mos Def Wiki/Bio

Mos Def (real name Yasiin Bey) was once one of the most promising rappers to emerge in the late ’90s. However, music became less of a priority for Mos Def as time went on. He did, on occasion, put out new music, such as 2004’s The New Danger, but his output was inconsistent and seemed to be dictated by whim. But Mos Def continued to get attention, especially from underground rap fans and critics alike, and his classic breakthrough albums — Black Star (1998), a collaboration with Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, as well as Black on Both Sides (1999), his solo debut — were revered, all the more so as time progressed. While protesting Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Jena Six incident in 2007, Mos Def frequently used his fame for political purposes.

It wasn’t until Mos Def was 14 years old that he got his big break as an actor and rapper when he starred in his first TV movie as Dante Terrell Smith Bey. After graduating from high school, he began appearing on television in a variety of roles, including one on the short-lived Bill Cosby show The Cosby Mysteries in 1994. In 1994, Mos Def teamed up with his younger brother and sister to form the rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics, and they signed a deal with Payday Records that didn’t pan out. ‘Big Brother Beat,’ by De La Soul, and ‘S.O.S.,’ by Da Bush Babees, both released in 1996, marked the beginning of his solo career. “Universal Magnetic,” Mos Def’s debut single from Royalty Records, was an underground rap hit a year later, in 1997.

A recording deal with Rawkus Records followed, and he began working on a full-length album with like-minded rapper Talib Kweli and producer Hi-Tek with Rawkus Records just getting off the ground. The resulting album, Black Star (1998), went on to become one of the most lauded in the history of rap. Mos Def’s solo album Black on Both Sides, released a year later, garnered even more attention and acclaim. The up-and-coming rapper did not release any new music after appearing on Rawkus’ compilation series Lyricist Lounge and Soundbombing, however.

Mos Def appeared in a number of films in the early 2000s, including Monster’s Ball, Bamboozled, Brown Sugar, and The Woodsman, and he also appeared on Broadway in Topdog/Underdog, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Along with several other legendary black musicians, he worked on the Black Jack Johnson project, including keyboardist and guitarist Bernie Worrell; drummer Will Calhoun; and bassist Doug Wimbish. Rock music, in particular the rap-rock hybrid, was being reclaimed by this project from artists like Limp Bizkit, whom Mos Def openly despised. With his all-Black band in the early 2000s, Mos Def hoped to infuse the rock world, and he played a number of small shows in the New York area. The New Danger, his second solo album, was released in October 2004 and featured Black Jack Johnson on a few tracks.

Mos Def’s third solo album, True Magic, was released two years later, following a few more acting roles, including the Golden Globe-winning Lackawant to Blues and the Emmy-winning Something the Lord Made (2006). Geffen, which had acquired Rawkus years earlier, released the album as a contract fulfillment during the final week of 2006, but only a small number of copies were sold. Strangely, the CD didn’t include any artwork and was packaged in a clear plastic case; however, the album’s lead single, “Undeniable,” received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance.

The Ecstatic, which was distributed by Universal’s Downtown label, came out in June of that year. It was around this time that Mos Def had significant acting roles in both Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind (as well as Cadillac Records, in which he starred alongside Jack Black) and (he played Chuck Berry). Another Grammy nomination came The Ecstatic’s way.

After that, he continued to work as an actor, appearing in films such as Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach and Robert Glasper Experiment’s Grammy-winning Black Radio, as well as on albums like A$AP Rocky’s At Long. Last but not least, there’s a new album from A$AP Mob. Following his recent arrest in South Africa for violating immigration laws, he announced his retirement from the entertainment industry and the release of his final album later that year via Kanye West’s website in January 2016.

I’ve discovered that courage of conviction, that sense of belief, and being bold enough to trust in your vision have their advantages. And there’s a quote that’s perfect for his vibe. People advised not to follow the path because you never know where it will take you but to go in the opposite direction and leave a trail in your wake. To be honest, I believe Chuck acted exactly as you describe. It serves as an inspiration to a wide range of people, not just musicians.

Career

Rapper Mos Def has carved a path for himself as one of the hip-most hop’s introspective and perceptive artists, spanning multiple musical genres and artistic mediums. The Native Tongues crew, which also included De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and Andres Titus, influenced Mos Def’s Afrocentric sound, which has helped him establish himself as one of the more thoughtful voices in new school hip-hop.

Sheron Smith and Abdul Rahman raised Mos Def in Brooklyn, New York City. Born in the heyday of hip-hop, he grew up immersed in the culture and learning from artists from all over the artistic spectrum. In 1996, Mos debuted as a hip-hop favorite with the release of “Universal Magnetic,” which led to his legendary collaboration with Talib Kweli. Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, their debut album, would go on to become one of the most lauded hip-hop albums of all time.

His solo debut, Black On Both Sides (1999), went gold and was hailed by critics as bringing hip-hop back to its roots as a political form of expression. Mos’ acting career has shown the same insight and passion as his music career. He has appeared in films such as Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, MTV’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera, 2002’s critically acclaimed Monster’s Ball, Showtime, and the romantic comedy Brown Sugar, for which he was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Mos has also worked as a writer, producer, and actor on the MTV sketch comedy series Lyricist Lounge, as well as the host, music supervisor, and co-executive producer of the HBO series Def Poetry. ‘Topdog/Underdog,’ which was nominated for a Tony and won a Pulitzer Prize, was Mos’ Broadway debut in 2002. Director George Wolfe and playwright Suzan Lori Parks collaborated again on an off-Broadway production of Topdog, for which Mos was nominated for an Obie Award.

He appeared in The Italian Job with Ed Norton, Mark Wahlberg, and Charlize Theron, which was released by Paramount Pictures. For his work in Something the Lord Made, Mos Def was nominated for a 2004 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. He starred opposite Alan Rickman. For the same role, Def was nominated for a Golden Globe Award (Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture) as well as a Golden Satellite Award (Best Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for TV).

He appeared alongside Kevin Bacon, Benjamin Bratt, Eve Sedgwick, and Kyra Sedgwick in the film The Woodsman. USA Today hailed his performance as “the movie’s best performance,” while the New York Times said, “I hope we don’t have to wait too long to see him in a big-screen leading role.” The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, from Spyglass Entertainment, also featured him as a co-star. Def played the title character in the film adaptation of Douglas Adams’ classic science fiction novel “Ford Prefect.”

The New Danger (Geffen Records), Mos Def’s eagerly awaited and critically acclaimed sophomore solo album, dropped on October 12th. In Rolling Stone, the album was praised as “Ghetto rock and righteous hip-hop from dazzlingly talented Def,” and in the New York Daily News, it was proclaimed “No one is doing more to change our notion of how hip-hop can sound.” A Grammy nomination for Best Alternative/Urban Performance went to Def in 2005 for the single “Sex, Love and Money,” and the album was certified gold by the RIAA. As the name implies, the phrase “most definitely” is part of the rapper’s moniker.

Urban Thermo Dynamics was his first band, and it included his younger brother and sister as well. They attempted to release an album in 1995, but the project was shelved due to a lack of interest. It took until 2004 for it to be made public. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was his first collaboration with Alan Rickman, and Something the Lord Made followed in 2004. (2005). Involved in a radio-only release of a song with British artist Craig David. It was a remix of Craig David’s number-one hit, “7 Days,” titled 7 Days Later.

By the end of 2011, he announced that he would stop going by Mos Def and start going by Yasiin Bey. Bill Maher’s show featured appearances by Christopher Hitchens and Salman Rushdie, among others. The debate between Christopher Hitchens and him was amusing because, during the debate, he called him “Mr. Definitely”.

In a video, he attempted to take part in the standard Guantanamo Bay force-feeding but stopped when it became too much for him to handle as a protest. Teachers and leaders are everywhere, but many of them are nothing more than propagandists.

Writers whose work I admire have an economy of language that appeals to me — the ability to use language efficiently. When you can have someone read something and see it, or if you can paint a whole scene with just words, that’s truly magical. What I’ve been attempting to do is paint a clear picture and reveal a new perspective. Absolutely. Singing those songs fills me with reverence rather than apprehension. It was a challenge, but one I eagerly accepted. I’m just grateful that I was given the chance to take part.
