Morray Wiki/Bio

Morae Ruffin (born September 9, 1992), better known as Morray, is a Fayetteville, North Carolina-based rapper and singer. He gained widespread attention in 2020 with his debut single “Quicksand,” and in 2021 he released his debut mixtape Street Sermons.

Many struggling musicians fantasise about receiving a phone call that will drastically alter their career. Or seemingly promising conversations with industry swindlers fail to materialise. The call came at the worst possible time for Morray, the 28-year-old North Carolina native behind some of the most soulful trap music in contemporary rap.

Morray was laid off from his job at a call centre in his hometown of Fayetteville last July after taking time off to perform at small venues. He had three children, his phone was disconnected, and only a few people were listening to his music. Morray considered never recording again after years of slowly saving and paying for studio time and music videos.  He believed in Morray’s music and told him he wanted to push him “as far as [he] is willing to go.” “I was praying for this opportunity, not expecting it to come.

Morray deleted all of his music from the internet after joining forces with Shalizi. He’d never had the funds to have his songs mixed and mastered, and he felt that many of them should be scrapped or reworked. That wasn’t the case with “Quicksand,” “Switched Up,” and “Lowkey,” which he re-recorded in professional studios before proper engineering.

Morray’s breakout hit, “Quicksand,” has over 13 million YouTube views in less than three months. Morray half-raps and half-croons about felonious hustles and nearly fatal altercations, backed by bluesy guitar, quaking drums, and skittering trap percussion. Throughout the track, he weaves polished yet poignant lines with melodic cadences. Morray claims that he has been compared to fellow crooning rappers Rod Wave and Roddy Ricch, but neither compares favourably. His voice is more resonant than Rod Wave’s, and his songwriting is more complex than the majority of Ricch songs. On “Switched Up,” his heartfelt ballad of betrayal, he sounds like a cross between Cee-Lo from Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley. Morray is humbled by each comparison, but the millions of views and tens of thousands of new fans have moved him to tears.

“I cried when I got my first 100,000 views. I’ve never had nothing in my life, and where I’m at now is amazing,” Morray says over the phone from his Hollywood hotel room, his voice brimming with gratitude and enthusiasm. He claims to have recorded 12 songs in just 24 hours while in Los Angeles working on his debut album.

“I’m putting in a lot of effort on this album. I want to make certain that if I do release it, it is exactly what people want to hear… They want to know more about Morray, so I’ll give them that.”

Career

Morray’s December and January singles, “Dreamland” and “Big Decisions,” only hint at his harrowing backstory. Morray’s mother worked tirelessly at low-wage jobs to keep the family afloat, but his absentee and abusive father added to the strain. They frequently stayed in motels or with relatives. Morray began hustling in his early teens, with little guidance and few role models.

Intervals in juvenile detention eventually resulted in incarceration. Morray fathered his first child and started working in construction at the age of 19, just a few months after his last bid. He walked for hours to work every day because he didn’t have a car. Morray, despite singing in the church choir, did not pursue music until he was in his early twenties. Raised on gospel and R&B albums played by his mother, he discovered rap through friends when his mother temporarily relocated them to Pennsylvania.

He was exposed to a lot of East Coast rap, but Drake quickly became his favourite artist. “I found out who Drake was and that was the end of it. He rapped and sang. I was never sure whether I wanted to sing or rap. When I discovered he had done both, I said, ‘Fuck it.’ ‘I’ll do both.'”

Morray used to make music that he thought would be commercially successful. His wife encouraged him to rap about his life, to create music that would connect with others who had similar experiences. Morray, who is quick to thank his wife for her help and advice, responded with the poem “Quicksand.”

Morray will return to his wife and children in Fayetteville after finishing his final day of recording in Los Angeles. He doesn’t have everything he once rapped about, but he’s grateful for what he does have. He hasn’t forgotten the events of his life prior to that phone call.My clothes are all clean. I received brand new dishes and forks. N***as don’t consider that a win, but it is to me.”
