Miriam Toews Wiki/Bio

Mirriam Toews

Miriam Toews is a Canadian writer of Mennonite heritage who lives in Toronto. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she grew up in Steinbach and has also lived in Montreal and London before settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

While attending the University of Manitoba and University of King’s College in Halifax, Toews worked as a freelance journalist for newspapers and radio stations. Her non-fiction book, “Swing Low: A Life,” was a memoir of her father, who had suffered from depression for most of his life. Her debut novel, “A Complicated Kindness,” was published in 2004 and went on to become a best-seller in Canada, earning her the Governor General’s Award for English Fiction that year. Besides being shortlisted for the Giller Prize, the novel, which is about a teenage girl who yearns to flee her little Russian Mennonite hamlet and hang out with Lou Reed in the slums of New York City, was also named Canada Reads’ best novel in 2006.

In 2000, she sent a series of letters to the father of her son, which was later published on the website www.openletters.net and included on the radio show This American Life in an episode about missing parents.

Mirriam Toews wikiIn 2007, she made her feature film debut in the Mexican film “Luz silenciosa,” which was directed by Carlos Reygadas and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

Her novel “The Flying Troutmans,” released by Knopf Canada in September 2008, is about a 28-year-old lady from Manitoba who accompanies her 15-year-old nephew and 11-year-old niece on a road journey to California after their mentally ill mother is committed to a mental institution.

The novel, Irma Voth, was published in April of this year. It was published in April 2014 that her most recent book, All My Puny Sorrows, was released.

She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Award for Fiction, the Libris Award for Fiction Book of the Year, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and the Writers Trust Marian Engel/Timothy Findley Award, among many others. She currently resides in Toronto.

Previously published novels include Summer of My Amazing Luck, A Boy of Good Breeding, A Complicated Kindness (Canada Reads 2006 and Canada Reads Canadian Bestseller of the Decade 2010), The Flying Troutmans, and Irma Voth, as well as one non-fiction book, Swing Low: A Life. Toews lives in Toronto, Ontario. The book, which is extremely funny, may not be a natural award-winner (prizes generally require books to be serious and literary, as if the two things were synonymous), but it has captured the hearts of both critics and readers this year, bringing its Canadian author to an entirely new level of recognition in the United Kingdom. Toews, on the other hand, would take home the award for joyfulness in literature if there were such a thing, for the near-miraculous act of turning suicide and bereavement into an entertaining novel that made readers laugh out loud.

Elfrieda (Elf), a beautiful, talented, and happily married concert pianist is determined to commit suicide. Yolandi (Yoli) is the crazy middle-aged mother of two teens, and Elfrieda (Elf) is the beautiful, talented, and happily married concert pianist. In the words of Yoli, “she wanted to die and I wanted her to live, and we were adversaries who fell in love with one another.” As it becomes evident that Elf will go to any length to attain her goal, Yoli is forced to contemplate if the most loving response would be to assist her in achieving her objective. Toews (whose name is pronounced taves, to rhyme with saves) has been forthright about the fact that the book is primarily based on his own life. Her older sister, Marjorie, committed suicide in 2010, after suffering from severe depression for most of her life. She committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, much as their father had done almost precisely 12 years before her brother.

How can you even begin to create laughter and brightness in the midst of such a tragic situation? According to Yoli in the book, following the death of her father, “He had seventy-seven dollars on him at the moment, and we used the money to get Thai takeaway because, as my friend Julie says about times like these: You still have to eat.” Toews knew from the beginning that humor would be an important component of the plot. The author’s goal was for people to not be terrified of the subject matter; she also hoped to establish a positive tone right from the start, as well as gain the readers’ trust, so that they and she could emerge together from a less dark place.

Her upbringing had provided her with great preparation for this endeavor: growing up in a home plagued by mental illness, humor had always been her go-to weapon. My father and sister had suffered from severe depression for the whole of their lives, therefore it was my responsibility to attempt to make them laugh in this stupid manner. I knew they were some of the funniest people I knew, but to draw a smile out of them was like winning the lotto.”Mirriam Toews image

Career

Toews was convinced that she would never be able to write about Marjorie’s death in the immediate aftermath of her death. “I was at a loss for words. Sisters have played a central role in most of Toews’s novels, from her debut, A Complicated Kindness (2004), a blistering coming-of-age story set in the Canadian Mennonite community in which she grew up, to Irma Voth (2011), a tale of female emancipation that deserves to be better known (“It’s also my husband’s favorite! “), to her most recent novel, The Last of the Mohicans (2013), “It’s like you and I are the only two individuals who have read it!”

In response to Marjorie’s reading of The Flying Troutmans (2009), in which a younger sister embarks on a road trip with her troublesome elder sibling’s children, author Toews recalls Marjorie exclaiming, “‘It’s like a Valentine to me,’… and it really was.” What was it about Marjorie that drew her attention in such a powerful way? “She piqued my interest to no end. It fascinated me that she was older than me and so different from me – dark and smart, and “in the world” in a way that was fascinating,” she says of the woman. I remember thinking to myself, “She was really kind and supportive of me, but there was always something I couldn’t quite grasp.”Mirriam Toews image

Another element influenced the author’s decision to write All My Puny Sorrows: “I was filled with rage towards the mental health system in Canada, its cruelty, the way patients are handled, how they are infantilized, and how it almost appears to be criminalised.” The thought of it was burning a hole in both my heart and head. “I didn’t intend for this to be an ‘issue book,’ but in a way, it has turned into one in its own right.” Toews goes to great lengths to point out that there are some decent people working in the psychiatric system, but the general picture depicted in the book is harsh in its criticism. When Elf doesn’t “co-operate” with her treatment, she is constantly reprimanded and punished; the staff is obsessed with enforcing rules (no mobile phones, no outside food) at the expense of even the slightest semblance of human compassion; trying to meet with the psychiatrist is “like trying to meet with the head of the Gambino family.” “I wasn’t even convinced he existed at the time.”

Her greatest regret, she says, is that she was unable to assist Marjorie in dying peacefully at Dignitas, as she had hoped she would. “Despite the fact that I believed her, it simply seemed like I couldn’t assist her. I was heartbroken.” But it’s something I deeply regret. When I think of how she died – violently and by herself – I am absolutely devastated.”Mirriam Toews picture
