Mike Crapo Wiki/Bio
He previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 1999.Crapo was born in Idaho and attended Brigham Young University. He studied law at Harvard University after receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1973. (J.D., 1977). During this time, he married Susan Hasleton, with whom he had five children. Crapo clerked for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1977 to 1978. He then briefly practised law in San Diego, California, before returning to Idaho (1979) and continuing his legal career.
Crapo joined the Republican Party in the late 1970s, and he ran in state conventions and local races while his brother, Terry Crapo, was a member of the Idaho House of Representatives. Crapo was inspired to run for public office after Terry died in 1982, and he was elected to the state Senate in 1985. He served until 1992, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was first elected in 1993 and was re-elected twice. He then ran for U.S. Senate and won with roughly 70% of the vote in the predominantly Republican state. Crapo took the oath of office in 1998.
Career
Crapo rose to prominence in Congress as a conservative voice. He was a staunch opponent of Democratic initiatives such as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010), as well as efforts to regulate the ownership of automatic weapons and to require federal background checks on gun purchases. He did, however, show a willingness to form bipartisan coalitions on specific issues.
He was a member of the Gang of Six, a group of three Democratic and three Republican senators who formed in 2011 to mediate the national debt debate, eventually reaching an agreement. Similarly, Crapo supported initiatives with the Environmental Protection Agency, a body that many conservatives despise. He sought market incentives, such as tax breaks and other considerations, to encourage landowners to protect endangered species on their property. He was a prostate cancer survivor who was also a leader in sponsoring legislation related to medical research funding.
