Miami Dolphins, a National Football League (NFL) franchise headquartered in Miami, Florida that competes in the American Football Conference (NFL). Having won two Super Bowls (1973 and 1974) as well as five conference championships, the Dolphins are the first team in NFL history to go undefeated in a season. The 1972 season finished with a win in Super Bowl VII.
In 1966, four years before the AFL and NFL combined, the Dolphins became a member of the AFL. Due to the team’s early failures, Don Shula, formerly of the Baltimore Colts, was hired as head coach in 1970. For the first time since his arrival in Miami, Shula transformed the Dolphins. In his first five seasons as head coach, the team made the playoffs four times, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 1972. The 1972 Dolphins team dominated the NFL on their way to the only undefeated season in the history of the league, featuring the “no-name” defence captained by middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti and a potent offence led by five Hall of Famers: quarterback Bob Griese (who was injured mid-season and replaced by Earl Morrall), wide receiver Paul Warfield, running back Larry Csonka, and linesmen Larry Little and Jim Langer. Miami defeated the Minnesota Vikings 24–7 in the following season’s Super Bowl, making them the first team to appear in all three in a row. Throughout the rest of the decade, the Dolphins consistently fielded competitive squads, but they failed to reach another Super Bowl.
When Dan Marino was selected by the Dolphins in the third round in 1983, it was the beginning of an illustrious career for the future Hall of Fame quarterback. A top-flight offence was generally led by Marino and the “Marks Brothers,” wide receivers Mark Clayton and Mark Duper, as well as a line that was anchored by centre Dwight Stephenson. The only time Marino and the Dolphins made it to the Super Bowl during his 17-year career was in 1985, when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 38–16.
After the 1995 NFL season, Shula retired as the most successful head coach in league history. Starting in the late 1990s, defence-focused teams headed by defensive end Jason Taylor, linebacker Zach Thomas, and cornerback Sam Madison had some success, but in 2002 the team went on its longest postseason absence in franchise history.. One loss in 2007 spurred Bill Parcells to be hired as the head of football operations, providing hope for a comeback. After going 11-5 in 2008, the Dolphins won the division after improving their win total by one game over the year before. When Bill Parcells departed the Dolphins following three straight losing seasons, the team was forced to look for a new head coach. After the 2015 season, the Dolphins had a franchise record seven straight seasons without making the playoffs due to their lacklustre play. The Dolphins recovered the following year, winning 10 games and making the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round. After that, Miami had three straight losing campaigns.
Miami Dolphins Biography/Wiki
When Marino was in high school, he was a Pittsburgh All-American quarterback, joining the ranks of the likes of Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, and Joe Namath, all of whom were from the state’s western region. Marino, on the other hand, stayed in the Pittsburgh area to play college football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was an All-American as a junior. Marino’s professional status sank after his underwhelming senior season, and the Miami Dolphins selected him late in the first round of the 1983 NFL selection.
The investment made by Miami immediately paid off. Six games into his debut season, Marino took over as the team’s starting quarterback. As a result of his play, he earned a Pro Bowl invitation. For the first time in his career, he threw for more than 5,000 yards in a season (5,084) and completed more than 40 touchdown passes (48) in a season (his records were broken by Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, respectively). Marino won the NFL’s MVP award that year, and the Dolphins went on to play in the only Super Bowl of his career, which they lost to the San Francisco 49ers and Montana.
