Luka Doni is a professional basketball player from Slovenia who currently competes for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Luka Doni was born on February 28, 1999. Additionally, he is a member of the Slovenian national team. Doni was a star young player for Union Olimpija before joining the youth program of Real Madrid. Doni was born in Ljubljana and played for Union Olimpija. In 2015, at 16, he debuted for their senior squad, becoming the youngest Player in the club’s history.

Two years later, in 2018, he led Madrid to the championship of the EuroLeague and won the Most Valuable Player award for both the EuroLeague and the Final Four. In addition, Doni was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the ACB and earned the Rising Star title in both the EuroLeague and the ACB in consecutive years. He was chosen to represent his decade in the EuroLeague All-Decade Team 2010–2020. In 2018, Doni announced his intentions to enter the NBA draft and was selected by the Dallas Mavericks.

His selection to the NBA All-Rookie First Team was unanimous, and he ended the 2018–19 season as the winner of the Rookie of the Year award. During his second year in the league, he was honored with a spot on the All-NBA First Team and was picked to play in the NBA All-Star game for the first time. Doni made his senior debut for Slovenia in 2016 when he was just 17 years old; he would go on to be nominated to the All-Tournament Team after helping Slovenia win its first EuroBasket championship in 2017. Doni is a member of the Slovenian national team.

Doni was born in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, to parents Mirjam Poterbin, an entrepreneur who owned beauty salons, and Saa Doni, a trainer who had previously played basketball. Doni had his first experience with a basketball when he was only seven months old, and by the time he turned one, he was already spending a lot of time playing with a toy basketball hoop in his bedroom. During his youth, he participated in several sports, including football.

When he was seven years old, he competed in organized basketball at his elementary school against opponents who were far more extensive and more physically capable than he was. Doncic was thus compelled to increase his basketball IQ and devise cunning strategies to prevail over his rivals. When he was younger, he looked up to American basketball star Lebron James and Greek basketball player Vassilis Spanoulis as his favorite players.

Luka Doni was encouraged to train alongside players of his age by the coach of the Olimpija Basketball School, Grega Brezovec when he was just eight years old. Luka’s father had just begun playing for his local club, Union Olimpija. However, Doncic was immediately pushed to a higher age group and would play incredibly well, earning the MVP while representing his team at the under-14 Vasas Intesa Sanpaolo Cup in Budapest in September 2011. This event took place in September 2011.

In his first game as Real Madrid’s professional team member, which took place on April 30, 2015, against Unicaja in the Liga ACB, Doni made his first and only three-point attempt in less than two minutes of action. He made his debut for Real Madrid in the ACB when he was 16 years, two months, and two days old, making him the youngest Player in the history of the league and the third-youngest debutant in the history of the company overall, behind only Ricky Rubio and Angel Rebolo. During the 2014–2015 ACB season, he appeared in five games and averaged 4.8 minutes, 1.6 points, and 1.2 rebounds throughout those games.

Doni joined the senior squad of Real Madrid consistently beginning in the 2015–2016 season. On October 8, 2015, he participated in an NBA preseason game and played against the Boston Celtics. He had four rebounds, one assist, and one block during the game. He debuted in the EuroLeague on October 16, when he was just 16 years old, and scored two points in a match Khimki won. He played in 12 games in the EuroLeague and averaged 3.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and two assists per contest.

On September 30, 2016, Doni first appeared in the 2016–17 season against Unicaja. He played for 19 minutes and finished with 6 points and four assists. In a victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 3, 2016, he led his team to an NBA preseason victory with three points, five rebounds, and four assists. On December 4, he recorded a season-high double-double by scoring 23 points and handing out 11 assists. Both of those numbers were season highs.

On December 22, he became the youngest Player in the history of the EuroLeague to be awarded MVP of the Round. This accolade resulted from his performance against Brose Bamberg, in which he scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and stole three balls. On January 14, 2017, he was awarded the same distinction after recording a victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv in which he contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.

After Real Madrid’s best Player, Sergio Llull sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the previous season, Doni played a more crucial position for Real Madrid heading into the 2017–18 season. In the opening game of the new EuroLeague season, which took place on October 12, Doni scored a career-high 27 points to assist in his team’s victory against Anadolu Efes. His following game was against Valencia, where he came close to recording a triple-double by scoring 16 points, dishing out ten assists, and grabbing seven rebounds.

After exploding for 27 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals on October 24, Doni was awarded the title of EuroLeague MVP of the Round for his performance. Two days later, he was again honored with the Most Valuable Player of the Round award after breaking his previous career high with 28 points in a victory over Algiris Kaunas by a score of 87–66. After October, he became the youngest Player in the history of the EuroLeague to be honored as the Most Valuable Player of the Month.

On December 8, he scored a career-high 33 points, six rebounds, and four assists against Olympiacos Piraeus. This performance established a new best point total for his scoring career. On December 28, Doni contributed 20 points, ten assists, and eight rebounds as Real Madrid defeated the reigning champions of the EuroLeague, Fenerbahce Douş, 79–77. Doni also guided Real Madrid to the win. Doni ended the game with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists on May 18th, as they defeated CSKA Moscow 92–83 to go to the semi-finals of the EuroLeague.

Real Madrid won the EuroLeague championship on May 20 as he led his team to win against Fenerbahce Douş. After scoring 15 points, he was later voted the Most Valuable Player of the EuroLeague Final Four. After playing in all 33 games in the EuroLeague, Doni earned the Most Valuable Player title, becoming the youngest Player to do so. He did this by averaging 16 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

In the 2018 NBA draft, which took place between June 21 and June 21, 2018, Doni was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks as the third overall selection. After that, the Dallas Mavericks acquired his services in return for the draft rights to Trae Young and a potential protected first-round pick in 2019. Rick Carlisle, the head coach of the Mavericks, made the following statement after the draft: “At one time, we believed there could be a little possibility Doni might slip to us, but a couple of days ago.

He said he is just too talented. We deal with a man we believe will be the franchise’s cornerstone. On July 9, 2018, he became a Mavericks rookie after signing an agreement with the team. Because he was given a late buyout from Real Madrid, Doni did not participate in the 2018 NBA Summer League. Before the start of the 2018–19 season, ESPN had him pegged as the front-runner to take home the Rookie of the Year trophy for the NBA. On October 17, 2018, Doni appeared in a game during the regular season. The game was a defeat to the Phoenix Suns by a score of 121–100. Doni finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Doni was honored as the NBA’s Rookie of the Month for the Western Conference in November 2018, and the award was given to him. The Houston Rockets were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks 107–104 on the 8th of December, thanks to Doni’s 21 points. In the game’s last minutes, he went on a personal run of 11–0 points after having struggled earlier. On December 28, Doni became the youngest Player in NBA history to score at least 34 points and became the first Player to hit seven three-pointers in a single game. He was honored as the Rookie of the Month for the Western Conference in December 2018.

He achieved a 30-point triple-double and numerous triple-doubles, making him the youngest Player in NBA history to accomplish both of those feats. After those two days, Doni was officially announced as a member of the World Team that will be competing in the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge. Doni was not chosen for the Western Conference All-Star team for the 2019 NBA All-Star Game, despite finishing second in the fan vote, behind only LeBron James, and placing eighth in the overall voting score. Additionally, Doni was rated second in the total voting score.

Since the league started giving the award per conference in the 2001–2002 season, he became the youngest player to ever receive the Player of the Month honor for the Western Conference. Additionally, he received the Breakout Player of the Year award from Sports Illustrated in December. Doni broke the record on December 8, 2019, for the most consecutive games with at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists since the ABA and NBA merged in 1976. Doni’s streak of games with at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists reached a new high with this accomplishment.

The previous record for most consecutive games won was 18, and it was held by Michael Jordan in 1989. On January 4, 2020, Doni had his eleventh triple-double against the Charlotte Hornets. He finished with 39 points, 12 rebounds, and ten assists despite his team’s 123–120 defeat. Doni was allowed to participate in his first NBA All-Star Game as a starter for the Western Conference during the 2019–20 season. He made history by being the youngest European player to start in an All-Star game. Doni earned his 22nd career triple-double on March 4, moving him above Jason Kidd as the Player with the most in the organization’s history.
