The history of the Spinners has received a lot of attention recently. “All these people have written about me, but there’s a major difference,” Billy the Kid said in “Anything for Billy,” author Larry McMurtry portrays him as saying. As far as I know, I was there. ”
It all began 25 years ago, when the stars aligned for baseball in Lowell and the Spinners were born. Paul Tsongas, the late brilliant U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, had the power to inspire a wide range of public and private institutions to work together for a better Lowell. The Merrimack Repertory Theatre, the Lowell National Historical Park, and the Lowell National Folk Festival attracted visitors from across and beyond the Merrimack Valley, and the Tsongas Arena project was about to become a reality.
Minor league baseball in New York and Pennsylvania was looking to expand at this time. After searching for a new location for the Elmira Pioneers baseball team, the owner of the New York-based franchise decided on Lowell. He was able to swap his team’s affiliation with the Florida Marlins with the Utica (NY) squad, which had a Boston Red Sox association.
Both the affiliation exchange and the move of the Elmira franchise to Lowell were permitted by the Red Sox, who wanted their players to be closer to Boston, thus they agreed to forgo their territorial rights. The Lowell Spinners were bringing professional baseball to Lowell for the first time. After that, things got even better.
The city got back to work. Lowell’s elected officials, state legislators, Congressman Marty Meehan, the Lowell Plan, the Arena & Stadium Commission chaired by Paul Tsongas (and subsequently Jack Costello), and the Lowell National Historical Park’s Peter Aucella all worked together to make things happen in the city’s long-term interest.
As a “temporary” home for the Red Sox, the city’s Park and Public Works Department employees worked hard to renovate Alumni Field so that the Spinners could play their first two seasons here. Over the course of the 2006 and 2007 seasons, more than 200,000 minor league baseball fans came to Lowell to watch the club.
While LeLacheur Park was being created, it became one of the finest minor league baseball facilities ever constructed. The new stadium was a huge success. Drew and Joann Weber, the new owners of a minor league Red Sox team, fell in love with the area and positioned themselves as the park’s informal hosts, welcoming fans old and new who were visiting their new home.
Sellout crowds flocked to Fenway Park year after year as players progressed from Lowell’s “short-season single-A” minor league team to the famed Boston landmark. It was now possible for young fans to follow the careers of their favorite players and marvel at their ascent to the “bigs.”
Without question, the Spinners are an integral part of the Lowell community and its surrounding area’s economic well-being. Almost every night, the team sells out LeLacheur Park’s 4,100 seats. And, like many minor league teams, they provide a fun family outing for everyone in the family, even the kids who aren’t particularly interested in balls and strikes. A Lowell Spinners game on the Merrimack Riverbank is a great way to spend a summer evening.
A unique name with roots to Lowell’s industrial mill past that still characterizes its architectural aspect was chosen by the team’s ownership as a name for the team. To show their affiliation with the Boston Red Sox, they designed logos and jerseys with the same colors and script. In other words, it’s not just a smaller version of the huge club.
