Lord Huron is a Los Angeles-based indie rock band. Lonesome Dreams, the group’s debut album, was released in 2012 on Iamsound in the United States and Play It Again Sam in the United Kingdom and Ireland in January 2013. The name of the band was inspired by Lake Huron, which band founder Ben Schneider grew up visiting and spending evenings playing music around the campfire. Vide Noir, the band’s third album, was released on April 20, 2018.
Ben Schneider, a founding member, began writing music in his hometown of Okemos, Michigan. Schneider went on to study visual art at the University of Michigan and completed his degree in France before relocating to New York City and working for an artist. Schneider relocated to Los Angeles in 2005. Schneider formed Lord Huron as a solo project in 2010, recording his first few EPs entirely on his own and gradually adding members to help play in live shows, the majority of whom he had known since childhood.
It reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart in its first week, selling 3,000 copies. As of April 2015, the album had sold 87,000 copies in the United States.
With the release of Lonesome Dreams, the band also gradually released a series of music videos, all shot in a western ’70s style, which Schneider describes as the album’s focal point and narrative. “We had this fun idea that Lonesome Dreams was like a collection of old adventure stories. It’s a collection of pulp fiction, and we wanted the videos to reflect that and have the same feel and style,” Schneider explained in an interview. They also decided to make a theatrical version of the videos available.
Strange Trails, the band’s second album, was released on April 6, 2015, in the United Kingdom and April 7, 2015, in the United States. With 18,000 copies sold, the album debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200, No. 1 on the Folk Albums chart, and No. 10 on the Top Album Sales chart. On June 26, 2017, the song “The Night We Met” was certified gold by the RIAA, and on February 15, 2018, it was certified platinum.
Several short videos with audio clips were released on Lord Huron’s official Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts in January 2018, leading to speculation of an upcoming album release. Vide Noir, the band’s third album, was officially announced and released on April 20th, 2018.
Lord Huron debuted five songs from the new album, Ancient Names (Part I), Ancient Names (Part II), Wait by the River, Never Ever, and Vide Noir, on March 8th, 2018 at Telegram Ballroom in Los Angeles, CA.
Their song “Ends of the Earth” has appeared onscreen several times. It can be heard during the end credits of Season 3 Episode 12 of Showtime’s Shameless and Season 2 Episode 6 of FXX’s Man Seeking Woman. “Ends of the Earth” is also featured in the films Endless Love and Walking With Dinosaurs, as well as the series finale of the television show Community.
