Lily Allen Wiki/Bio

Originally from Wales, Allen was born and raised in West London’s Hammersmith district as the daughter of Welsh-born comedian Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. She has an older sister, Sarah; a younger brother, actor Alfie (who is the subject of her song “Alfie”); and a younger sister, Rebecca. She has three siblings. Sarah’s mother, Allen’s mother, was from a working-class household in Portsmouth, and she was 17 years old when she gave birth to her daughter.

Her parents and siblings were ardent Catholics. In addition to being the goddaughter of Wild Colonials vocalist Angela McCluskey, Allen is also a third-cousin of musician Sam Smith. Allen made her television debut in the episode “The Yob” of The Comic Strip Presents…, which her father had co-written.

She was three years old at the time. Allen grew up on a council estate with her family, where she spent most of her childhood. Later, they moved to Islington, London. During that period, the family was housed with comedian Harry Enfield, with whom her mother was having an affair. Joe Strummer, the singer and guitarist for the Clash, was a close friend of Allen’s. Allen was also expelled from the Independent Hill House School for a second time.

After hearing Allen singing “Wonderwall” by Oasis in the school playground, former University of Victoria music student Rachel Santesso, who went on to become an award-winning soprano and composer, called Allen into her office the next day and began giving her lunchtime singing lessons.

Allen was eleven years old at the time. Allen ended up performing “Baby Mine” from Disney’s Dumbo at a school concert as a result of this. Her parents are actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, and she is their daughter. When she made some of her vocal recordings public on Myspace in 2005, the exposure generated led to airplay on BBC Radio 1 and a recording contract with Regal Recordings.

Her music career officially began in 2006. It was in July 2006 that she released her first mainstream single, “Smile,” which peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart. Her debut album, Alright, Still, was warmly praised, selling more than 2.6 million copies worldwide and earning Allen nominations for the Grammy Awards, the Brit Awards, and the MTV Video Music Awards, among other awards, shows.

The release of her second studio album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, in 2009 marked a departure in her musical direction, with a more electropop vibe replacing the ska and reggae roots of her debut album. Upon release, the album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and at number one on the Australian ARIA Charts. The album garnered positive reviews from critics, who praised the singer’s musical development and maturity.

It was the inspiration for the smash tracks “The Fear,” “Not Fair,” and “Fuck You.” At the 2010 Brit Awards, she was recognized for her achievements by receiving the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist. Allen and Amy Winehouse were credited with initiating a process that resulted in the creation of the “year of the ladies” media label in 2009, which saw five female musicians who were known for their “experimentalism and bravery” nominated for the Mercury Prize the following year.

Sheezus was her first album to achieve this feat. She attained a grade 5 level of proficiency on the piano and a grade 8 level of proficiency in singing. Allen was also a musician who played the violin, guitar, and trumpet, as well as being a member of a chamber choir. “In the Bleak Midwinter” was her debut solo composition. She starred as a lady-in-waiting in the 1998 film Elizabeth, which was co-produced by her mother and in which she played the role of Elizabeth.

Allen had an appearance in the music video for the Fat Les song “Vindaloo” the next year. She dropped out of school at the age of fifteen because she didn’t want to be there “A third of her life is spent planning for the next third of her life, in order to provide herself with a pension for the following third of her life. Lily Allen, a London-based pop singer/songwriter known for her omnivorous musical preferences and mischievous demeanor, established a reputation for herself nearly as soon as she posted her recordings on the Internet.

Since she is the daughter of comedian Keith Allen, Lily Allen has spent most of her youth bouncing around from one school to another; between the ages of five and fifteen, she attended a total of thirteen different schools. Because she didn’t have much of a chance to make lasting friendships, Allen turned to books and, especially, music to keep herself entertained.

She listened to everything from T. After she graduated from high school a year later, she recognized that music was the only profession she could pursue. In 2005, Allen concentrated on her songwriting and singing, developing a style that was equal parts sweet and bratty; in 2006, she set up a MySpace page and posted demos of her songs, both as individual tracks and as part of two limited-edition “mixtapes” that included tracks by Dizzee Rascal, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Ludacris, among other artists. After receiving critical acclaim for her work, Allen gained tens of thousands of MySpace followers, received airtime on BBC Radio One.

Career

Allen began working on her full-length album, which was released as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl single “LDN was released as her debut single in the spring of 2006. Both LDN and Smile, which were released the following summer, were chart triumphs, with the former reaching number seven on the U.K. chart and the latter reaching number one the week it was first released in the United States.

Following up on the success of Smile, Allen released her first full-length album, Alright, Still, which she backed with a string of tour dates that stretched all the way to the end of the year. Despite the rapidity of her rise to fame, Allen continued to update her MySpace page with amusing blog rants, such as one about her June 2006 appearance on Top of the Pops, in which she criticized the lead singer of the Kooks for “wearing broken straw hats and dark sunglasses” indoors and the Dirty Pretty Things for having “organic sliced bread on the rider.”

Allen also posted a rant about her June 2006 appearance on Top of the Pops in which she criticized Allen rang in the new year with more tour dates, including appearances in Japan, Australia, and the United States, as well as the publication of Alright, Still in the United States. The following year, she received nominations for the Brit Awards in the categories of British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo, while her singles “Smile” and “Alright, Still” were nominated for the British Single and British Album categories, respectively.

The majority of Allen’s 2007 was spent on the road traveling, but he also teamed with Dizzee Rascal on the duet “Wanna Be” by Maths and English and performed vocals on Basement Jaxx’s Crazy Itch Radio. With her relationship with Chemical Brother Ed Simons and subsequent miscarriage in late 2007 and early 2008, Allen’s personal life and side projects were almost as prominent as her music career.

Allen’s relationship with Chemical Brother Ed Simons, as well as her subsequent miscarriage, made headlines in late 2007 and early 2008. During the month of February 2008, Allen hosted a discussion show on BBC Three called Lily Allen and Friends, which aired until the end of April that year. Allen released two new demos on her MySpace page that month, including “GWB,” which was about President George Bush.

For her second album, she collaborated with producer Greg Kurstin of the Bird and the Bee, and she co-wrote several songs with him rather than simply providing the lyrics for the songs she already had written. She has also collaborated with Jamie Reynolds of the Klaxons on songs, and she created a song about comedian James Corden for the 2008 Shockwaves Awards, which were held in Los Angeles.

Another new song, “Everyone’s at It,” was released in the fall of that year, and Allen courted controversy once more with an illegal copy of Britney Spears’s “Womanizer” in December of that year. It’s Not Me, It’s You was released in early 2009, and was preceded by the single “The Fear.”

The album explored issues such as drugs, celebrity, family, and society. However, despite the album’s critical and commercial success, which included platinum certification in the United Kingdom and chart-topping debuts at the top of the charts in three countries (including the United States), Allen did not renew her record contract and took a break from the music industry in September 2009.

In the meantime, she kept herself busy by launching her own record label, In the Name Of (which featured Cults among its artists), creating songs for the musical adaptation of Bridget Jones’ Diary, and establishing a family with her fiancé Sam Cooper, whom she married in June 2011. Afterward, she revealed on her website that she was in the studio working on new songs with veteran producer Greg Kurstin. She also contributed vocals to P!nk’s 2012 hit “True Love,” which was also produced by Kurstin.

She gave birth to her second kid at the beginning of 2013. After a cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” for a holiday television advertisement by U.K. store John Lewis was published in November 2013, she was signed to RCA Records. The single version of the song quickly became her third number-one hit in the United Kingdom. It was followed by two more singles that both hit the Top Ten in the United Kingdom, and both of these songs were included on her third studio album, Sheezus, which was released in early May of the following year.

The album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Following the release of the album, Allen performed at the Glastonbury Festival and started on a headlining tour that lasted through the end of 2015. Earlier this year, she released her fourth studio album, No Shame, which featured the hit “Trigger Bang,” which she co-wrote with rapper Giggs.

On her third studio album, she broke away from her longtime producer, Kurstin, and embraced a more intimate, electropop aesthetic. A terrible era for the singer had just ended with the filing of a lawsuit against stalker Alex Gray, and the release of the album came on the heels of that victory (Gray was convicted and sentenced to an indeterminate hospital stay in 2016 after having broken into her house and threatened her).

Aside from admitting to having gone through an “identity crisis” during and after the recording of Sheezus, Allen also admitted to working to rediscover her artistic direction in an interview with Vulture in 2018. She was amicably separated from Cooper in 2018. No Shame debuted at number eight on the UK albums chart in its first week of release.
